Smexy Books was created in March of 2009 and reviews all genres of romance and urban fantasy. We currently have five reviewers:
Angela: I’m a lifelong reader. I remember hiding under the covers with my flashlight as a small child so I wouldn’t get in trouble for reading after bedtime. Even then I was reading books that I probably shouldn’t have been for my age group… Grimm’s fairy tales and biographies about Eleanor Roosevelt and Rosa Parks. In middle and high school I began my romance addiction by discovering Johanna Lindsey and Katherine Sutcliffe.
Nowadays I like to skip from genre to genre. If you look through my reviews you’ll see a mix of romance (all sub-genres), fantasy, urban fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and horror. Some of my favorite authors are Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, T. Kingfisher, Alisha Rai, Sarah MacLean, Beverly Jenkins, VE Schwab, Tessa Dare, K.J Charles, Grace Draven, and Meljean Brook (Milla Vane). The Kraken King is probably my favorite book. If you haven’t read it, I highly suggest you go to Amazon and one-click, It’s amazing.
Jen (the booknista)– The perfect day? Coffee, book, yoga, book, long walk while listening to a book, wine, book. Repeat. There you have it. I’ve been reading forever and while I’d love to write the next big novel and have it made into a Netflix series, my real career is in marketing and I read to escape and explore new worlds and meet inspiring characters. I loved Harry Potter and Twilight. They were the gateway drugs to fantasy, urban fantasy, romance, and more young adult stories.
I go from super dark romance books to cleansing my palette with young adult heroines who kick ass and may or may not be immortal. My favorite authors are: LJ Shen, Vi Keeland, Kresley Cole, Kate Stewart, Christina Lauren, Elle Kennedy, Sarah J. Maas, Penelope Douglas, Penelope Ward, Siobhan Davis, Sarina Bowen, Jennifer Armentrout, Victoria Aveyard, Pepper Winters and so many more… I am a social media addict, a major TV whore and enjoy long hikes, healthy cooking and spending time with my fabulous family.
Kate-My earliest formative reading memory was reading The Littlest Dragon Boy by Anne MacCaffrey in the seventh grade. After that, I branched out into the rest of the Dragonriders of Pern series, and I’ve been hooked on romance and fantasy ever since.
I have wide-ranging reading tastes and am definitely a mood reader. I don’t usually go all-in on specific authors, but my most frequently re-read books are Sunshine by Robin McKinley, Gentle Rogue by Johanna Lindsey, and Burn for Me by Ilona Andrews. I can usually be found reading contemporary or historical romance, fantasy of all sorts (and fantasy romance), and sometimes science fiction and non-fiction.
When reading, I enjoy witty banter, pirates, books set in Chicago, Regency England with magic, road-trips, dominant heroes, and really smart heroines who are very good at their jobs. I will one-click any book if either main character is a librarian or the story is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. I recently decided I most like books that can be described with the phrase “…and hijinks ensue.”
Mel- I’m a lifelong bookworm and discovered my love of reading books with kissing at a pretty early age. Gilbert Blythe was my very first book boyfriend. I’m a huge lover of contemporary, the occasional historical depending on the author, and more recently, have developed a love for paranormal. I love anything with humor and witty banter, am deeply afraid of super angsty romances, and will totally melt over a cinnamon roll hero. The easiest way to sell a book to me is with the words “slow burn”, “problematic heroine”, or “epistolary romance”. Talia Hibbert, Alyssa Cole, Olivia Dade, Nalini Singh, Sarah MacLean, and Kate Clayborn are some of my all-time favorites.
