April Round Up and Kindle Help

April 30, 2009 by Mandi

First before what I read – Lost was amazing this week. Daniel gets shot by his mother? Sawyer (my tv boyfriend) and gang are on the run (I assume they get away from Horace?)Does anyone know where Rose and Bernard are??? Desmond – how is he going to play into the rest of the season? If Sawyer escapes, will he finally take off the darn jumpsuit? 1974 jumpsuit=unsmexy! :)

Ok – TV talk is done…

What I read in April:

Passions Unleashed – Larissa Ione (awesome!)
Micha – Laurell K Hamilton (eh – ok)
Halfway to the Grave – Jeaniene Frost (awesome!)
One Foot in the Grave – Jeaniene Frost (see above)
At Grave’s End – Jeaniene Frost (total Bones and Tate lover)
Once Bitten – Kalayna Price (more please!!)
Immortal Warrior – Lisa Kendrix (it was ok)
First Comes Marriage – Mary Balogh (lurved it)
Then Comes Seduction – Mary Balogh (lurved it some more)
Magic Burns – Ilona Andrews (acquired a new boyfriend, Curran!)
Magic Strikes – Ilona Andrews (srlsy – Curran is my boyfriend, step off)
Lover Avenged – JR Ward (screw Curran, John Matthew is Lover MINE)

Good month – I know everyone is sick of me mentioning JR Ward, but Lover Avenged was the highlight of the month! Plus the “Grave” series by Jeaniene Frost was so good as well as the Magic series. Mary Balogh gave me my historical fix, while Kalayna Price was an awesome new author I found.

My goal for May is get my tbr pile down! I have three left in Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series that I need to finish before Skin Trade comes out this summer. Plus I really want to finish the Sookie Stackhouse books before True Blood starts up again this June. Those alone will keep me busy all of May. I have lots of new authors in my tbr I want to try as well. I am going to start with The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks by Josh Lanyon. I need my Lanyon fix…then I might finish Anita – I am missing Jean-Claude.

My husband asked me today if I want the Kindle for Mother’s Day..ummm…Yes!! I was going to ask for it for Christmas but darn if I will tell him that. He said he noticed me reading a lot lately – really? Such the observer, my husband:) So now I am super excited!!!!

So my question is – do I go for the Kindle 1, Kindle 2?? Sony e-reader?? I need suggestions!

I like my Sony reader a lot. It’s got that touch-screen thing where you can “turn” the pages by drawing your stylus (or finger) across the screen which helps you to read much faster than if you had to press a button to load the next page.

It’s got a built-in light so you can read just fine in almost total darkness without disturbing nearby sleepers.

It’s also the size of a trade paperback and very lightweight. And its battery lasts forever and you can magnify the type very large if you want to read on the treadmill, etc. All good things.

Oh, and it’s got a wonderful little search feature if you’re writing a review and trying to find a phrase on a certain page. This option brings up a little keyboard on the screen and you can type in the letters of your search phrase with the stylus.

Since I read a lot of m/m that comes out only through the various e-publishers, I find the Sony suits me more than the Kindle. Before I got my reader, I had to read books on my computer monitor (not good) or actually print out ms and carry them around (so not good!).

I’ve heard the Kindle is good for magazine and newspaper subscriptions. I may get a Kindle as well at some point just so that I can convert all my mainstream fiction and nonfiction to ebooks.

I got a little scared off from the Kindle at first when I read a review of it on Amazon where one poor guy was trying to read a scientific paper on it and the footnotes weren’t included on his Kindle copy! Eeeek! I would imagine that Amazon has fixed that problem by now, though.

LOL Mandi! You crack me up! I love your comments after each book you’ve read.

So happy to hear that Balogh was good seeing how I picked up this new series of hers. YAY! I have a few of Frost’s books and this only reminds me that I need to pull them out of the TBR and dust them off for a read. :)

I can’t wait to discuss Rehv and JM with you when I finish the book. I’m hoping to conquor it this weekend. I’m of a mind to savor it but it’s more likely that I’ll devour it.

    Have a great weekend!!

    :) VFG

Obsidian – Thank you so much!! I will have to do some major comparing! I want to get it more for m/m books too since they always seem to be e-format first. I’ve been trying to read them off my computer too..this will be so much easier.

VFG – I didn’t try to savor it:) I will have to do a reread to catch things I missed. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!

I srsly love a good Halloween party. Like I said on your blog, my friend has a huge one every year and her only requirement is that you must dress up to get in. It gets pretty crazy:)

I like to read in bed at night too..so the light tip is a good one!

    Hey Mandi…

I had fun this month with your reading list as well…

Does Hubby know that he has some serious competition and that you are quite fickle with your affection…….

Oh Yeah on the Kindle – everyone should have a e-reader… I have a Iliad and the only thing it doesn't do is vibrate….. I'm not kidding.

I am trying to come up with a reading challenge for May as well… I might just try your new author idea…

Hell Yeah on the Lanyon… I wish he would write faster…

EH! First, I am so excited you are a Lanyon fan!! Now that I am getting an e-reader, I can access his work far better.

Poor hubby:) He likes to ask me who his competition is, but I just say – trust me, you don’t want to know..lol. I AM fickle in my fictional lust. Too many hot alphas roaming around.

LOL!!! To many hot alphas is not the words honey!!! To many books to little time… To many men… so many thoughts!! My hubby just looks at the cover… if there is a partial naked guy on the front… he makes a face and doesn’t even ask… I think he learned not to ask! lol

That is my requirement for my party as well. I mean what is the point if you don’t dress up!

Yea, I like the light idea too!! But I might have to check out EH’s version, Iliad… the only thing it does not do is vibrate.. I thougt I was going to choke!!! LOL!!

Ereader for Mother’s Day? Go you!! That’s awesome. I don’t know much about either of them but I’d say the Sony with Backlighting would be the one I’d want. I have an ebookwise that is nice but you have more freedom with secure formats with a Sony! Someday I’ll have one of those.

And some day I am going to read a Josh Lanyon book. I see that name alot.
