Blood Magic – Jennifer Lyon

May 14, 2009 by Mandi 7 Comments

Darcy MacAllister is a witch, an earth witch to be precise, and she doesn’t know it. Adopted at birth, she has grown up always knowing something was a little off with herself.

Axel Locke (super smexy name!) is a witch hunter, born to kill demon witches and protect those that are innocent.

Earth witches and witch hunters use to work together. Witch hunters would track down and destroy demon witches, those witches that have given up their souls to cast demonic spells, while earth witches would cast protective spells over the hunter’s families so the demon witches could not extract revenge. If a death curse ever got through, the witches would reverse the spell, and the hunters would then offer protection to the earth witches.

However, thirty years ago a group of demon witches cursed all earth witches and witch hunters, now the hunters crave the blood of all witches, and most, unable to control it, drink the blood of any witch, turning them rogue.

Axel is desperately trying to save his baby sister’s life, who has been cursed with a death mark from a demon witch. If Axel kills the demon witch, the curse will be lifted, but Axel will succumb to the lust and turn rogue. The only other alternative is to find an earth witch and have her reverse the curse. Problem is they are all in hiding, now that the demon witches and rogues are out to destroy them. After learning his rogue father wants an earth witch killed, which happens to be Darcy, Axel decides to kidnap the witch to make her save his sister.

Problem is, Darcy has no idea she is a witch, and now she is kidnapped and just a bit unhappy with her situation. She also realizes if she escapes (trust me, Axel is way too alpha for that to happen:) she will be back in the open, sure to be killed by rogues.

Now she has less than two weeks before the full moon to discover her powers, save a little girl, and try not to fall for the strong, leader of the Witch Slayer Hunters.

This is the first book in a new series by Jennifer Lyon, and she has developed an exciting world filled with evil witches and super sexy alpha witch hunters. The chemistry between Darcy and Axel sizzles – literally when he touches a cut on her that is bleeding. Having sex helps the witch hunters sate their lust for witch blood, and Axel is in desperate need of sex when he is near Darcy. He feels the weight of the curse, obsessing over her blood, but those feelings get intertwined with the desire he feels for her. The sexual tension builds until Darcy can come to trust Axel and embrace her natural born powers.

Axel is the definition of an alpha – he has an overwhelming need to protect the females in his life, he is deadly with a knife, his house is probably the most secure place on the planet (although it is fun to see Darcy try to break out) and he has a group of friends and fellow hunters that would make the most strong of mortal men run away screaming like a girl.

Darcy has spunk, and even though she finds herself kidnapped, trapped in the basement of a stranger’s house, she does not fall apart or freak out. She has always known there has been something more inside of her, and as she slowly learns what she really is, her confidence grows even more.

There were times in the beginning of the book that I found myself a little confused about how the curse was cast, how it affected all the witches and hunters and how demon witches came into existence. I would feel a bit lost and then all of a sudden I was hit with a bunch of information that didn’t quite seem to flow with the story. A little more of the back story would have worked better in the beginning of the book. Once the world was laid out, the story seemed to flow much better and I was able to lose myself in the book.

The world Jennifer Lyon’s has built is fun, exciting, and with all those smexy friends Axel has, I am ready to read about the next one!!
