Kiss of Fire – Deborah Cooke

May 5, 2009 by Mandi 10 Comments

(Very smexy cover)

Sara Keegan has left her stable, organized life as an accountant to run her late aunt’s bookstore, that specializes in psychic and mythical books. On her way home from work one evening, she is attacked in an ally and almost killed before someone swoops in to save her. Her life is saved by no ordinary man – his name is Quinn Tyrell and he can turn into a dragon. Quinn is a Pyr – the Greek word for fire and belongs to a team of dragon shifters that are charged with the protection of mankind. Quinn can manipulate all earthly metals. He is the Smith and there is a prophecy that states the Smith and the Seer (which turns out to be Sara) will unite and give birth, therefore saving the Earth. He warns Sara that the Slayers, those dragon shifters that are against all human kind, want Sara dead so the prophecy will never come true.

Sara is reluctant and overwhelmed by this sudden intake of knowledge and the fact that someone tried to take her life. She can’t make her mind up about this sexy man who is putting her life before all others, but as more danger lurks around her, she finds herself drawn to Quinn not only for protection, but for the romantic spark she feels every time he is near. Quinn has withdrawn himself from his fellow Pyr for centuries because he felt betrayed, but now that Sara’s life is in danger, he has to rely on his fellow Pyrs to save his destined mate and the fate of the prophecy.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I like Sara because when she is living her ordinary life and a dragon happens to come out of no where and say hey – I’m all yours, she for the most part accepts it. I am glad I didn’t have to read 100 pages of her telling everyone she doesn’t believe in dragons although there is one standing in front of her. And I like Quinn – he is the ultimate protector, he accepts Sara for his mate the first time he lays eyes on her, even though he admits he would have been attracted to her without the destiny part. I just feel together they could have been so much more. From the moment they meet there are literally sparks between them when their hands touch. Imagine what you could do with those sparks once you get in the bedroom!! Instead, it was very – unsparkly. ;)

I did enjoy the other members of the pyr, and would definitely be up for reading another book in this series in hopes for a bit more intense romance. The plot moved along well and there was enough action to definitely keep my interest. I have a good friend that tells me the series gets better as you read, so I will try out the second one – it is not like it is a difficult task to read about hot sexy men that can shift into dragons. I just want the hot and sexy to carry throughout the book!

Rating: 3 Stars

The series includes:

Kiss of Fire – Quinn the Smith – February 5, 2008
Kiss of Fury – Donovan the Warrior – August 5, 2008
Kiss of Fate – Erik the Leader – February 3, 2009
Winter Kiss – Delany the Outcast – November 2009
Niall and Rafferty’s stories are planned and dates are TBA.

When you mentioned that the sparks between them became rather unsparky, I think I recall feeling the same way and that is probably the reason I never did read the second one when I bought it and why it is still sitting on the shelf.

I’ll have to see what your thoughts are one the second book and maybe read it if I feel any ‘sparks’!

Hehe… dragons are unsparky in the bedroom. How sad.

Anywho… The covers cool. Probably why I bought it. But then I bought it used and from what you’re saying it sounds like it wasn’t a buy new type of book. I’ve got book two as well. Will look forward to see what you think if it.

    Great Review Mandi!

I wasn’t a fan of this book. The whole premise of the “firestorm” really intrigued me but the fact that Sarah hops into bed practically within seconds of meeting Quinn was ridiculous.

I thought the author could have introduced some mad sexual tension and I felt totally cheated.

    :) VFG

VFG – I agree. I mean if you are going to jump in bed together quickly, at least make it worthwhile:)

Amazingly enough, book 3 has been my favorite so far, which is weird when you consider how much I disliked the hero of that book in books 1 & 2.

And Ms. Cooke does have some of the hottest covers out there. Yummy! :D
