(Nice sophisticated cover!)
Genny works for Spellcrackers.com, an agency owned by witches that literally cracks the unwanted spells for their clients. Genny is Fae, she is able to absorb any spell, but she is unable to cast even the easiest of spells. She is also part vampire and she struggles with her bloodlust. Witches and vampires are mortal enemies so she must keep her vampire side a secret.
She works with Finn, another fae, a satyr to be more precise (he even comes with smexy horns) and he does nothing to hide his feelings for Genny. Both being Fae, the magic is always trying to nudge them together, however her vampire side is always pushing her to take a bite out of his neck. Although she finds him extremely attractive and he is a really nice guy, or horned creature, she can not let herself get too close to him for fear her vampire side will overcome her and her secret will be revealed.
A high profile vampire gets charged with murdering his girlfriend and Genny gets called in to examine the body to see if there was any magic involved, therefore disproving the accusation the vampire killed the girl. During the course of her work, she meets many other vampires, some evil, most very sneaky and out for no good. One in particular, Malik comes to town and this is when the story really started to work for me. He is very mysterious, coming to the aid of Genny but for reasons unknown. One aspect that I loved in this book was the way Suzanne McLeod every so slowly brings Malik around. She doesn’t give a lot away about him, but he becomes an integral part of the story.
Suzanne McLeod has created a very interesting paranormal world in the first book in her Spellcrackers.com series. Her Fae aren’t always nice, her vampires are creepy, not just creepy in the sense they want to suck your blood, but they are creeps in general as well. Although Genny works for a company cracking spells, most of the book is focused on her dealings with the various vampires involved in the mystery surrounding the girl’s death and Genny’s internal struggle between her physical needs as a vampire and the shame she feels when that side of her takes over.
The story started slow for me, but I loved the character of Genny right from the start, and because of that I stuck with it. She is tough, but not over the top. She also makes fun of herself and sometimes situations she finds herself in, something I like in a heroine.
At the beginning there are a lot of characters introduced and lots of details. I found myself going back to reread certain parts because I was having a bit of trouble keeping it all straight. It took me about a third of the way into the book before I could feel myself getting sucked in and the second half of the book really impressed me.
The ending had a perfect set-up to the next book in the series, The Cold Kiss of Death, which was released July 16th.
