New Abs, I mean New Moon Review-Part One

November 24, 2009 by Mandi 50 Comments

Something very unexpected happened on my big date night with Little Eddie. I fell in love – with a werewolf. Simmer down, simmer down – all will be ok. I still love Little Eddie (although we did have a lover’s quarrel and are not speaking at the moment). See, the date started off great – I had my popcorn, Eddie had his gazelle.

But before I go any further, Katiebabs of Babbling About Books and More and I have decided to do a joint review of New Moon. We have both been anticipating this movie for months and have talked about tight abs and sparkly sparkles on Twitter forever. So let’s get to the good stuff:

Smexy: Alright Katie – go ahead. Scream it at me in big bold letters, I deserve it. For months now on Twitter you have been touting Team Jacob, and I have been saying no, booo Jacob, give me Edward. I was wrong. You were right. Hot damn did Jacob not only look good in this movie, but he blew Edward out of the water. Robert Pattinson looked liked and acted like his cardboard cutout that Nordstrom sells. Robert Pattinson made such an impact in Twilight that I have to give huge kudos to the people who created New Moon. My theater literally erupted when Taylor Lautner took his shirt off. (ok, and I totally shouted a “woot woot” too) and then, which I think is even more amazing, at the very end when Edward takes his shirt off for the big reveal, the theater was totally silent.

My gasping over Jacob did have one repercussion, Little Eddie, my date for the night became quite offended with me. He dumped me halfway through the movie for this tramp.

Whatever Little Eddie – I found myself a new man. One that isn’t afraid to take off his clothes – meet “Muscles Mc J” aka – Big Jacob.

So go ahead Katie and tell me you were right.

KB: I knew New Moon would be the movie where the audience would go, “Edward who?” to “take me now Jacob!” From a book and movie perspective New Moon is where lines are drawn and the fans pick sides between Edward and Jacob. When I read New Moon, I was still on the fence on who Bella should choose. After seeing New Moon, I had no doubt in my mind that it is all about Jacob. I felt that Robert Pattinson’s acting was so off and silted. When he left Bella, I was not affected in any way. When Taylor aka Jacob appeared on screen, it was like a breath of fresh air. He brought alive the movie in such a way from his skill as an actor to his ease in the role that anyone who was on Team Edward would shift to Team Jacob. Movie Edward is a very pale (haha) comparison to movie Jacob. It is no competition who wins in the body department and the same goes for acting. Speaking of acting, what was your opinion of the acting skills of Robert, Kristen and Taylor? How about any of the others secondary characters in New Moon? Did anyone else make an impression on you?

Smexy: I actually thought Kristen Stewart did a better job in New Moon. In Twilight there was so much sighing and weird noises coming out of her mouth. She seemed more at ease and mature in this role. I still don’t love her for the role of Bella overall though. As you said, Taylor did a great job, I was really impressed by his performance. Robert Pattinson, as much as I hate to say it, just didn’t deliver. Yes, he was not in a lot of the movie, but there was no spark, or sparkle when he was on screen. I did enjoy the brief appearances by Jessica and Mike this time around and I of course love Charlie, Bella’s dad. The Volturi, for what we saw of them seemed to have the same sort of creepy vibe as in the book. I am looking forward to getting more of them. What did you think of the werewolves, KB? I loved the special effects and the fight between Jacob and Sam. I wish the actual wolf boys would have received more screen time. Do you think the wolves represented the book well?

KB: I am in agreement with you about Kristen Stewart. At certain points I thought she did a great job, especially her interactions with Taylor but she seemed so bored, not depressed because her sparkle man walked out on her. Even when she seemed excited or felt that rush from riding the motorcycle that Jacob fixed to the cliff jumping, it felt so ho hum. Billy Burke played Charlie perfectly. I also like Ashley Green as Alice. She really brings a nice personality to the character even though her lack of fortune telling at the most important times annoyed me. In the very short time Michael Sheen was on screen as Aro, he really gave a great performance even though he was underused. And poor Dakota Fanning brought nothing as Jane. The one character I was also very impressed with was Sam Uley, the alpha for the wolves. Again in the short time Chaske Spencer was on screen, he really gave a nice insight to the character.

When the boys turned into werewolves, I felt a rush and really felt they did represent the book well as a whole. My favorite parts where when we saw Jacob with his wolf crew and welcoming Bella into his world.

Mandi I have a confession. I saw 2012 instead of New Moon last weekend. Can we still be friends, after this shameful confession?

I am all about Team Jacob, Edward and his sparkle can suck it.

P.S. Come hell or high water I will be going to see New Moon this weekend!

As I mentioned at my blog, I'm not a fangirl, but I was rooting more for Edward in Twilight. This time around, it's Jacob all the way. Not just cuz he's so hot w/o his shirt on, but because dayum, the guy is one of the good ones. I'd smack Bella upside the head if I thought it would knock some sense into her, but me think she'd just lose her remaining brain cells.

    Go Naked..er Jake!

Will you still talk to me?

Stacy – He is a good one – but I think Edward is too. He has never liked what he is and he refuses to let Bella become like him…yet. Bella is annoying. ;)

Did anyone have the sameexperience I had in the theater when Taylor ripped off his shirt and the crowd went OHHHHH!?

And don't get me started when Taylor cut his hair and was walking in the rain with only those jean shorts on.

Then when Edward took off his shirt, there was silence or a few snickers?

Okay… and there was silence (except from me) when Edward came on shirtless… but still…

Yes, there were teenage girls sitting next to me (imagine that!) and they gave me some weird looks and lots of whispering. See the humiliation I am put through for this blog.

What is worse, at the hair dressers today, I still had edward in my purse (from the movies, I don't carry him around – honest!) and my son took him out to shoot him with some happy meal toy. People were like – why do you have an edward doll in your purse? Sigh. :)

What a pouter that Little Eddie is! Just because he can't take off his shirt he gets all jealous of other guys.

Your review made me laugh. :) Lautner definitely has a Matt Damon thing going on–I think it's so funny that you can definitely see the influences on both Lautner and RPatt. Lautner said he admires Matt Damon and RPatt said he wants to emulate James Dean.

    Hey Mandi and KB..

Great vibes with the combo review…

loving the gazelle Mandi and still jealous of your Eddie toy and now you added a Jacob toy as well..Jealous much!!!!

I went to see it and I must admit I loved it..

I thought everyone brought individual strenghts to their part.. the wolves of course outshone the whole lot of them…

But Edward is suppose to be cold and standoffish – he was, Jacob is meant to be this hot bad boy – wanting to get the girl, he certainly projected that and after all the "Dear God" screams in the cinema where I was – a few of those people would certianly like to have a few things to say to Ms. meyer about why Jacob did not get the girl…

Glad you girls had fun with your dolls at the cinema…
