Sonnets for Sinners: Everything One Needs to Know About Illicit Love

Sonnets for Sinners by John Wareham
June 16, 2010
Hardcover, 120 Pages
Welcome Rain Publishers

What better way to talk about Valentine’s Day then to talk about sinners. Ok, so maybe that doesn’t make any sense – but I have never found Valentine’s Day to be a super mushy holiday, so when I was offered this book for review, I thought it would be a fun post for this holiday weekend.

John Wareham’s take on sinners, or “illicit lovers” falls into the Triangle of Compromise – Need, opportunity, and excuse. The needs resulting from being unloved in childhood or in a current relationship. Opportunity, when you find a similar person in a similar situation that feels your pain. And an excuse. He asks, does true love excuse everything? John Wareham takes us through many sonnets, from William Shakespeare to Tiger Woods, as he explores why desire, lust and longing rule our hearts.

It is amusing to read a poem from Shakespeare that talks about lust leading us not by our brains but maybe from below the belt, and then to have a poem found in an email from the Governor of South Carolina with really beautiful words. It would have been even better, if it had been written to his wife, rather than to his mistress. It seems sinners are present, no matter what time period is discussed.

The sonnets take us through the first daring filled days of an affair, to the end, where guilt has seeped through the cracks. As John Wareham writes, “On the bright side, the ending of sorrow can be the beginning of wisdom. Well maybe.”

A very delightful book and one that all can enjoy.

Thanks to Meryl L. Moss Media Relations, Inc., I have a copy to giveaway! Just leave a comment and I will pick one person at random on February 16th.

    Happy Valentine's Day!

Go ahead. Make my day. Pick me as the winner of "Sonnets for Sinners". That will be the closest I'll ever get to an illicit lover, a sinner or even a sonnet : ) It's a cold world out there. Send some heat!
