Why I read: The author asked for a review.
Favorite Quote: Lust slammed through Jade revving her system from zero to holy shit in two seconds flat.
In two years and six months, the barrier separating earth from the demons of the underworld is set to disappear. The Banol Kax are set to up rise and bring an apocalypse. This is where the Nightkeepers come into play – they are to protect humans from this devastating event. The fourth book in the Final Prophecy series features Lucius and Jade. Lucius is not a Nighkeeper, but in a previous book a demon invaded his body, and as part of the exorcism, they tried to turn him into the Prophet, so he could gather more intel for them. In order to kick-start his powers the Nightkeepers think he needs to invoke sex magic, which means Jade is in for a bootycall. Jade and Lucius have a previous history, even have had sex – until the demon took over and Lucius has gone through an extensive recovery period.
All is for the fate of mankind, so they put aside the awkward feelings and move forward with the smexin’! First on the agenda, is to try to get into the library, a magical place which hopefully holds key information to their upcoming battle. Lucius is frustrated he can’t get into the library – he has tried everything, and now sex is his last option. The Lucius that Jade meets now is physically different. Muscled, tall, broad – a true warrior. She realizes the Prophet spell must have had some effect, with such a drastic change in him.
Meanwhile the Banol Kax want their own sun god in the place of the the rightly god, Kinich Ahau. In nine days during the summer solstice, they are going to put their god in his place. In order to further the Nightkeepers cause and stop the sacrifice of the sun god – Lucius and Jade must answer the question – is it sex that unlocks these powers or love?
I enjoyed Demon Keepers and the world Jessica Andersen is building. First let me say, this is the first book I have read from this series and I definitely would have benefitted from reading the previous books. Once I discovered the glossary at the the back of the book, I felt I had a much better grasp of the world.
I love the relationship between Lucius and Jade and the action and adventure in this book, but before I go into more detail I first have to say the one thing that held me back throughout the book. Too much information and too much detail. This is a complicated world set up, with lots of players – both bad and evil and lots of things happening. I could barely see straight during the first twenty-five pages. I just wanted to get started with Lucius and Jade’s story and have the important past events fall into place. Instead we get massive information overload and it made the story very hard to get into. I found this overly descriptive phrasing happening throughout the book.
However, diving through that – we have a great romance and a really fun story. The relationship between Lucius and Jade is a beautiful one – and although complicated outside forces are coming at them, their intimate relationship is really quite simple. It takes them some time to truly admit their feelings, but at the same time, they let it happen. They roll with the punches – they both have scarified so much for the greater good, I think they are expecting a much harder road to true love than what is presented to them.
The world Jessica Andersen has created is really cool. I wish I had read the previous three books, I think I would have appreciated it much more. Besides the romance, she has several other Nightkeeper characters, all with their own problems and issues to deal with. Very unique characters that were a lot of fun to read about. She also advances the story to the eventual 2012 deadline, and I am very interested to see how this is all going to end up.
Finally, there are several times I laughed throughout this book. Many smart-ass comments and humorous moments mixed in with stressful trying times for these characters makes it a fun read. Take out the overly descriptive and excessive information, and Demon Keepers is a solid mix of romance and action that makes for an enjoyable read.

I enjoy Andersen's world-building and side characters. I read the first 3 and thought 'just okay'. For whatever reason I usually can't connect with the main characters.
P.S. Did John Cusack make an appearance?

Hey Mandi. Jessica Andersen is one of the "big kahunas" of my writer's group (NECRWA). She's super nice, totally down to earth, and has a wicked funny sense of humor (which obviously comes out in her writing!). I'm glad you enjoyed the book.
I just watched 2012 with my kids this past weekend..I had to keep reassuring them that it was just a movie! John Cusack is gonna save the world? Oh boy, we're in big trouble…. hee hee!

KC – I haven't read the previous books but I really enjoyed these main characters.
Cecile – Yeah, she does a great job building the world! I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
Penny – Cool!! I've been to at least one online chat with Jessica Andersen and JR Ward and she cracked me up!!
I've never seen 2012…I know – I am missing out on some Cusack action.

Oh no… I shouldn't have read this review. Now I am looking at another series to read (and I'm behind on the others). Oh well, will have lots of good books to surround me.

Thank you Mandi! I have the third book in this series on my TBR list. I like the series, but I agree with you regarding the level of detail. Also, there are certain phrases in the books that remind me of JR Ward's BDB books…coincidence I am sure, but it does throw me out of the books. And I'm not an abbreviation fan. Regardless of all that, I do find the world building and the plot very interesting.

Great review Mandi!
Wow, so info overload, huh?
I have this series in my TBR and I must say that I'm really intrigued by the whole end of the world bit in 2012. I've also heard that the worldbuilding is pretty stellar with Anderson so I'm really excited to start the series. But, I'm super glad I read your review though cause it looks like I'll benefit from reading the books all in one swoop. Now to find the time….
Hugs, VFG
P.S. I love this cover.
