Lara wants revenge against the Cougar Guardians. Her mother was killed many years ago by a cougar shifter, and since then she has done everything in her power to take them out. Next on her list is Kane.

Ironically, Kane has direct orders from the council to take Lara out himself. He has been tracking her and has finally located the motel she is in. As he steps into her room ready to kill her, he falls directly into her trap.  But before she takes her final revenge – they both realize things are quite as they seem. Kane knows the council would not have authorized a hit on Lara’s mother unless there was a good reason – and he starts to have doubts about who actually killed her. Lara realizes she might need Kane’s help to get to the root of her mother’s murder, and gives in just a bit. Plus, she is lusting after him like she never has before. With that twinge that something is not quite right, they both take a step back and decide to proceed with a truce.


Kane is the second in Eliza Gayle’s Black Cougar series and I liked this one. Kane is a very alpha shifter and soon after he meets Lara, he realizes his mating instinct can not be suppressed. It is fun to read this kind of scenario where you know these two will end up as mates, but at the moment they hate each other and both want the other dead. There are a lot of snarls, sarcastic comments, and of course hot sexin’. This is definitely an erotic book, and Eliza Gayle does not disappoint with the steamy romance.

There were a few times I thought the sex overpowered the storyline. At one point Kane really needed to tell Lara the mating process has started, as she had no idea, but always conveinantly couldn’t find the right time. Later, when Lara does find out and feels betrayed, when Kane starts to seduce her she forgets why she is mad. She even says, “How could anyone be expected to think straight when her clit throbbed like a musical instrument?” Well, I’m not sure – but I probably would not have forgotten about Kane’s betrayal quite that quickly.

All that aside, this is a fun, erotic paranormal romance. Just like in Lucas, I am still very intrigued by their brother Malcolm, who walks that moral line and I can’t wait to see how he is going to be reformed in his book, out next!
