Petty Like a God is the first book in Brian Fatah Steele’s Godlings series. Here we meet the Godlings-son’s and daughters of the Gods. Using an interesting mixture of mythology and religion, Steele takes us on a hilarious yet often retrospective journey through the Godlings lives, trials, and bar hopping.
The story settles around Noc and his favorite bar. Noc, Nocturnal, is the son of the Grim Reaper. Pushing 500 plus years old he is not ready to settle down and become the bringer of Death. His best friend and drinking partner, Turney, is the son of Saturn aka Father Time. While he is ready for the ascension…he isn’t ready to give up the beer and the chicks just yet. There is also Emma the daughter of Mother Nature, Sophie the daughter of the Sandman, Mina and Martin the twins of War, and the newest addition, Evie the daughter of Satan.
Amidst the drinking and dancing, a fellow Godling is murdered. As the bar they are in hampers all magic but a Godlings, the consensus is that she was murdered by another Godling. The scooby gang gets together and proceeds to find out the who and why of the murder. When Noc’s dad approaches them about solving a series of murders and disappearances they once again use their powers, minds, and friendship in an exciting action filled adventure that spans continents and realities.
The casual and conversational writing style enhances the story, creating an exciting fast read that stays with long after you turn the last page. The drinking, smoking, and comradely took me back to my high school and collage days. When growing up seemed like a million years away and my only concern was hanging with my friends and my boyfriend. Steele has created characters you know or want to know. People you want to hang out with till early morning dawn. Each of these Godlings is a force unto themselves. Engaging and realistic, their quips and antics kept me laughing through out the book. Evie was my favorite. Her gentleness and love towards Noc is such a contrast to her blood thirsty enthusiasm towards her heritage.
There are grammatical and editorial errors in this book as this is self published. It was not a big deal to me and did not distract me from the story.
All in all I loved this story and cannot wait to see what Steele has planned for us in his next installment of the Godlings series.
