Suzy Bean is a size sixteen and while she loves her curves, she is also trying to adopt a more healthy lifestyle. She is trying to give up smoking and reduce her obsessive caffeine habit. She still likes her martinis though, and after a party where she drinks a bit too much, her friend JC Mosino drives her home and hormones flare up. They start getting physical and all goes great until JC mentions how he loves her fluffy stomach or when he offers her his shirt, and then says it may not fit her.
Hurt and confused, Suzy leaves angry. JC is in love with Suzy, and loves just the way she is, but being a guy, his words don’t always come out right. And being a girl, Suzy is a little too sensitive and takes things the wrong way. Meanwhile, Suzy has a new boss at work, Xavier, a very sexy, Blair Underwood look-a-like, who has an eye out for Suzy. When JC gets wind of Xavier and his intentions, jealousy rises to the surface.
I like that K.T. Grant gives us heroines who break out of the typical petite, kick-ass mold. In The Claiming of Suzy, Suzy is a girl struggling with self confidence. She may have it on the outside, but inside she is a mess of emotions. She really likes JC, but she is so touchy about anything he says to her, she pushes him away. We first meet Suzy in For the Love of Mollie, and while I love getting to know her more in this book, I feel like she lost a little bit of her spunk from the previous book. But that being said, her insecurities are examined in this one and those must be faced before she can move onto find love.
At times I felt Suzy is a bit wishy-washy in her desires for JC. She is obviously attracted to him, but when Xavier comes into the picture, also lavishing attention on her, she becomes confused. I think overall I wanted just a bit more serious focus on her relationship with JC. It felt like she could be wooed away too easily. But I did enjoy JC and how he would not give up on her. And I hear Xavier may have a book in the future, and I am looking forward to see what kind of woman he will end up with!
