Blurb: Revenge. It’s all Grayson Spencer wants. Christophe dit Menart, a human with dark magical powers, destroyed the life she loved. She wants the pleasure of killing him, no matter the cost to her. If not for Durian, a dangerously sexy demon fiend charged with keeping Christophe alive, she would have succeeded, too. Now, she’s certain all hope is gone. But he has a plan and an offer she can’t resist…
Durian has spent his life as a trained and sanctioned assassin. His duty: to enforce the laws against demons harming humans. He’s always prided himself on staying out of the fray, carrying out his orders and honoring his fealty to his warlord, but never getting attached. Never until Grayson, a spunky and determined woman clearly gifted with magic herself. He convinces her to swear fealty to him so he can protect her and teach her to use her magic to taste the revenge she so desperately wants.
They’re soon bound together in a forbidden desire–a dangerous passion that calls into question Durian’s oath of loyalty to his warlord. When he refuses to return her to Christophe, his disobedience threatens to inflame the tumultuous war between demons and the magekind. Can they–and their love–survive?
I’m stealing the blurb for this one, because honestly, this world confuses me. I found myself rereading numerous pages and the glossary, trying to cement in my head the difference between mageheld, magekind, fiend and Kin. There is a glossary at the beginning which definitely helped me out but at the same time, I have to say it felt a little bit like too much work to read this book. Maybe it is just me! I don’t know.
But don’t get me wrong. Although I never fully connected with the world building, I did enjoy this book. I really think the heroine, Grayson or Gray is really well done. When we first meet her, she doesn’t know nor trust Durian and she has that “fuck you” attitude that I totally bought into. She works the spunk, and is eccentric and eclectic. I love that while at first she doesn’t trust Durian at all, she is smart enough to realize that her chances of survival are best placed with him – and she doesn’t fight it. She knows absorbing magic from the man Christophe killed (her former lover) is out of control inside herself and she wants to learn how to better herself. So while she is very independent and a bit sassy, she is also willing to depend on others, and I love that in a heroine.
Durian is sworn to the warlord Nikodemus. He is their assassin and is proud of the job that he does. In this world, Durian is sworn not to harm other magekind, even though at some points it is obvious some other magekind have committed sins. I enjoyed that the males in this book, don’t necessarily have that brotherly camaraderie, – their relationships take on a very interesting tone. Not always trustworthy, yet there are a few scenes with Durian, Gray and some others that are very intense. The villain is done well with a very creepy tone who is constantly plotting for more power.
Like I said above, it was hard for me to absorb the world in this book, but I did enjoy reading it. I think this can be read as a stand alone.

The world in this series confuses me also. The glossary does help but it takes away from the book when you have to go back and look at it every few pages.

Thanks for the chance to win this. Once I get a book in my head, I have to read it now matter how it reviews. I had the same problem with Black Dust Mambo, except there was no glossary in the front and I kept wishing there was one *crossing my fingers* I'd love to read this

I had been wondering about this one and am always hesitant to start a whole new dimension, world, alternate reality, etc. I was glad to see your comments address that and also that this can be read as a stand alone.
