Favorite Quote:”Well, we’re in the convent and they’re in the convent. That’s two too many people in the convent.”
Lily Parker has had to grow up hard and fast since arriving at St. Sophia’s School for Girls. Previous events (see Firespell) opened a whole new world for Lily; showing her new and dangerous things about her friends and herself. But now she is adapting to being an Adept and trying to control her newly found Firespell powers. She is still concerned about her parents activities and Sebastian. When Lily and the other Adepts are doing a normal sweep through the tunnels under Chicago they are attacked by creatures they have never seen before. As Lily and her friends investigate this new development, Lily is given some information that raises questions about the Dark Elites, the Reapers, and everything she has been taught so far.
Hexbound is the second installment in Chloe Neill’s enchanting teen urban fantasy series-The Dark Elite. A character driven novel that follows Lily Parker and her best friend Scout around as they try to balance school and crushes during the day and fighting the darkness that threatens Chicago at night. Chloe Neill has such a wonderful and powerful voice. I’m a huge fan of her Chicagoland Vampire series and this one is proving to be just as enjoyable. You will see a similarity between the two series- the sorority/fraternity group feeling is prevalent here as well. Humor plays a large part in her stories; along with some action, suspense, and a sweet dab of romance. Her characters are vivid and realistic-each one endowed with the ability to carry their own story.
The world building is intriguing as Neill layers fantasy over reality in Lily’s Chicago home away from home. This series has an engaging plot line that seems to follow a week or so in the life of out the protagonists and picks up almost right where the last book leaves off. Light and low key, there aren’t many edge of your seat moments but plenty of action and progression to keep you entertained till the end. The romance(s) are sweet and some we see some secrets revealed that promises to bring some interesting developments in the future. One thing though-I do wish we would have seen more physical interaction with the reapers.
All in all an enjoyable teen urban fantasy. I look forward to the next installment set to release in July 2011; title to be released.

Great review Tori! I have The Chicagoland Vampires series on my TBR list. I'll have to hold off on this series until after I read that one but it does sounds like a good YA read.
