Guest Author Thea Harrison and Giveaway

May 2, 2011 by Mandi 70 Comments

We are so happy to have Thea Harrison here today, author of Dragon Bound which comes out tomorrow! Thea, take it away…

What do you get when Wyr fall in love?

Do you ever have a song get stuck in your head? So often it seems like a random thing, when usually it’s not as random as it seems. For example, you might have heard the song playing at a store and you just didn’t register it consciously.

This morning while I got ready for work, I started singing a song. “What do you get when you fall in love?” I dum-de-dummed a bit. I could hear the music in my head along with the singer’s voice, but I couldn’t remember the name of the song or who sang it, and I’d actually forgotten most of the lyrics.

Later Google told me that the song I’ll Never Fall In Love Again has had a long and varied career, and it has been sung by many famous artists. I remember it best sung by Dionne Warwick.

Since I was thinking about work too, of course, it seemed very natural for my two trains of thought to merge. In my new paranormal series that begins with Dragon Bound (release date May 3rd), there are seven Elder Races demesnes in the continental U.S. The main focus of Dragon Bound is on the shape shifter demesne that I have named the Wyr.

What do you get when Wyr fall in love? And not just a little bit in love, but a crazy whole lot in love?

Like humans, Wyr have the capacity to fall in love several times and have affairs, but when it comes to the big L—Love—Wyr mate only once and that’s for life. Deeper than falling in love, the mating period is a dangerous, often violent time filled with volatile emotions and actions, bouts of extreme jealousy, and a heightened sexuality.

Because this is a unique experience for each Wyr, the mating period is not a season, but an individual occurrence that comes from a complex combination of choice, sex, instinct, actions and emotion. Everything has to occur at the right intensity and time. Nobody fully understands when the mating for a Wyr becomes irrevocable. The stakes are even higher when a Wyr mates with a non-Wyr. Those pairings can all too often end in tragedy for the Wyr, if the partner leaves or dies.

Does this sound like it might be challenging enough to face on a normal day?

These are the kind of stakes my hero and heroine, Pia and Dragos, face in Dragon Bound. Not only do neither one of them realize at first what is happening between them, but they also face other challenges that include thievery, multiple kidnappings, inter-demesne discord, and the machinations of Dragos’s arch-enemy, the Dark Fae King. No wonder Pia has a hard time keeping her nail polish from chipping, and Dragos comes close to killing his best friend.

So how might the lyrics of that classic song go if a Wyr had written it? What do you get when you fall in love?

A guy who might actually turn a city to rubble, that’s what you get for all your trouble. And he’ll never fall in love again.

Thanks Thea!!

      Hi Scooper!

I keep forgetting to click notify me for followup comments, so I’m glad I checked back for this question.

You know, in some ways I’m not good at talking about my own stuff. I’m too close to it. If you’d like to look on my website at: http://www.theaharrison.com, on the Dragon Bound page there’s a collection of recommendation by great authors such as J. R. Ward, and Ann Aguirre, Nalini Singh, and more. If you see an author you like on that list, then the chances are good you will enjoy Dragon Bound. I hope so, at any rate! I also have posted plenty of excerpts for you to try before you buy. :) Hopefully that will help you decide if there’s something different enough about my writing to give it a whirl.

      Happy reading!

Gosh, I just read my question and it sounded rude. I didn’t mean for it to sound that way. I just wanted you to pimp it to me a little. To be honest it’s already on my wishlist. I was looking for reasons to bump it to the top of the list. Thanks for the info.

      Hey Scooper!

I think your question was awesome, and it seems to me that many readers are probably asking the same questions! That was me trying on a pimp hat for size –> go to my website + get sucked into the story with the awesome excerpts = lots of links to bookstores to buy! But you might not have gotten to the links yet, so you could not be aware of my sneaky master plan.
