Favorite Quote: “He was all broad shoulders and narrow hips, this Indiana Jones clone, former Navy SEAL, former Montana cowboy, current all-American hero, expert medic, volunteer humanitarian aid provider and giver of shirts.”

Yes ma’am it’s time to saddle up with Luke “Doc” Colter – one of Cindy Gerard’s few BOI (that’s Black Ops, Inc) operatives that is still single. I’ve long wondered who Cindy would choose to pair with the team’s medic, – turns out she chose to go with an internationally famous; most people recognize her face super model named Valentina.

On a midnight train across the Peruvian Andes these two happen to be sitting together – and it’s lucky for her – when a couple of hired guns come looking for her. Yes, if I’m on a train and some bad guys want to kidnap me I hope I happen to be sitting across from a mega hot ex-special forces dude. The story takes off right away – with them racing across the countryside, meeting up with Luke’s team (hooray!) and unraveling the mystery of who is after her, why, and what the unstoppable force of the BOI’s can do to stop them.

“Val couldn’t help but think, Good Lord. Doesn’t Luke have any ugly friends?”

The answer is no – being attractive is a part of the team requirements it would seem. Of course being that this is a fictional group of ex-special forces males in romanceland, this should not be surprising.

I am a huge fan of this steamy series – and really enjoy Gerard’s writing style and characters. Just like any great action packed romance, they sometimes border on silly and unbelievable, have emotionally charged scenes, inappropriate moments for sexy time, and memorable scenes as well. In other words – just call me a fan girl. As far as if they need to be read in order to enjoy- no. Past characters and sometimes plot lines are re-visited in these novels, but mostly they can be read as stand-alone. I still recommend reading them all – as it lets you know the characters better, and builds anticipation for when each of these heroes gets his own book just like any series. Fellow fans of this series will enjoy what a big part many of the guys featured in past novels play.

I’ve never read a book from Gerard that I disliked, and this is no exception. The characters had great scenes and dialogue – I found myself smiling on more than one occasion and the pages flew by. Unfortunately this is one of the weakest books in the series. The heroine was hard to like and seemed a bit dense at times. I felt that the plot was thin, the suspense was not convincing, and the villains were lame.

The thing that really bothered me was how cookie cutter and light this one felt. Not only did I feel like elements had been repeated from past books, but both of the main characters have problems and issues to sort out that will take a lot more than just finding the answer in a lover to cure. I didn’t feel like the depth was here in the relationship or characters themselves – and it really could have been. This is the first Gerard book I’ve read where at the end I wondered if these two would actually stay together. I’m not convinced aside from them both being very pretty and liking each other that it’s once in a lifetime love we’re talking about here.

And isn’t that a pretty big deal in romance land?

Perhaps not, but Gerard usually makes me believe in, love, and care about her characters. My pickiness and complaints aside – this was an enjoyable romp through South America with my favorite A-list (black ops) team.  Luke Colter is charming enough, and there are enough great scenes and dialogue to make this a memorable addition to a series that I adore.

Even though this one wasn’t a mind blowing read, you add to the pimp voices telling me I really need to try Cindy Gerard and well, I’m weak when it comes to Black Ops ;)

I have re-read the first four in this series at least twice – really Cindy Gerard (even at ‘just ok’) is SO MUCH BETTER than most any other RS author in my book. Her bodyguard series (that was written before this one) is made of awesome too. In fact – the last book of that one gives us a first peek at our hero + heroine in the BOI series of book #1.

*fangirl alert* yes, that’s me. :)

She truly is awesome – I suggest starting with BOI #1 Show No Mercy *or* look at her backlist (www.cindygerard.com) and see which plot/characters appeal to you. They’re for sure enhanced by going in order, and in fact her final of the bodyguard series leads into BOI and introduces those characters, but you could read any of them alone.

I enjoyed your review. Cowboy & seal? Be still my heart LOL. Can’t wait to read it. I’ve enjoyed every one and Into The Dark remains one of my fave rereads.
