Today’s excerpt is more of a building up to a sexy scene. ML Buchman writes a really great alpha hero and sexual tension.
Before I give the excerpt, I have to give a description of Major Mark Henderson, nicknamed “The Viper.”
Six feet of cliched soldier. Broad shoulders, raw muscle, and the most dangerous-looking man Emily had ever met. His straight black hair fell to his squared-off jawline. His face clean shaven, eyes hidden by mirrored Ray-Bans. Rumor had it they were implanted and the major no longer needed eyes.
The most common theory placed Major Henderson’s mother as part snake and his father as pure vipor. The very fastest, most dangerous viper, everyone added quickly. There were even debates on exactly what breed that would be. Others claimed that he hadn’t been born but hatched.
And now on to the smex….
Mark covered the five steps between them faster than she could raise her arms to welcome him. He plowed into her and kept right on going until her back slammed against the chopper’s pilot door. He’d have driver the air from her body if their mouths were not already clamped together, her arms wrapped around the back of his head.
Her chopper.
His mouth raged along her jawline, down her neck. She shoved him away and tore at the release on his flight vest. Didn’t bother to push it off his shoulders, but dragged down the tab on his flight duit. Rammed her hands down the front into the silken gym shorts he wore and wrapped her fingers around all that hard heat. He was so ready; well, so was she.
Emily reached for her own vest only to find Mark had already removed it without her noticing.
For a moment he froze. His hands at a stop. Why weren’t they on her? Ravaging her?
Mark stood there, the front tab of her flight suit still in his hands, pulled down past her waist. He wasn’t looking at her face; he wasn’t stripping her naked.
He was staring like a man struck dumb at the line of bare flesh that ran from her dog tags all the way down, revealed by the rolled back flaps of her flight suit.
“You weren’t kidding.” He turned his face up toward the heavens. “She wasn’t kidding. Thank you, God.”
Then he looked into her eyes, and she watched his turn suddenly black and feral. With a growl drive up from somewhere past speech, he dragged her suit off her shoulders and down to her ankles in a single pull.
The Night is Mine releases February 1st. I really enjoyed it.

Is this a first book, new series, or might I have some catching up to do? Never heard of this author.
SN says
It looks like a brand new author – definitely a first in a series.
It also seems that this author is a man – the author’s blog says “Matthew”. Interesting, and not something you see often in what looks like romantic suspense.

This is the first book of a new series. Yes, a male author according to his website :)

I thought this book was a blast. I’m totally looking forward to sequels. Did not know it was a male author, but in hindsight it makes perfect sense.

Yes..I had the best time reading it!!! So entertaining.

Hey Mandi,
Thanks for the nice write-up! So glad you loved the book, so did I.
Let’s see:
1. Yes, it is the first of a 4-book series (with a 2-book option). “I Own the Dawn” will be out in August.
2. It is my 3rd sale, my 6th book published, or my 10th or 12th book (depending on how I count them), but my first romance. I started in SF/F and then moved on to thrillers. All except the thriller are centered on strong heroines, not necessarily as strong as Captain Emily Beale, but you wouldn’t catch me messing with any of them. All of the books have strong love stories, but this was my first romance.
3. Yes, I have another series, contemporary romance. Search of “Where Dreams are Born” at your favorite e-vendor (POD coming soon).
4. Yes, I’m male, or my wife and kid are in for a really nasty shock. :) And no, I have no military background, I’m about the least macho guy you’d ever meet. I became fascinated by military heroines while writing my thriller “Swap Out!” The nation’s top TV chef has been targeted for elimination by U.S. Special Forces and only he knows why. He is rescued by the daughter of his long-lost love interest, and she is a warrior flying one nasty piece of military helicopter. Shocked the daylights out of me when she showed up. So I had to do the research and out of that, “The Night Stalkers” was born; strong women flying secret helicopters and the men they deserve.
5. It’s a total blast!!!
Again, thanks for the write-up. More coming, I promise!
