I recently admitted to the world that I haven’t really seen any movies from the 80’s. As in – no Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, no St. Elmo’s Fire, no Say Anything etc…Why you ask…well, I don’t know. You would think in the past 34 years I would somehow come across come of these movies. But somehow I haven’t.
This news did not get a warm reception from my friends.
There was an uproar. People started tweeting me Jake Ryan quotes, and I said – who? I think some broke down in tears.
Thankfully Tori came to my rescue and sent me my very own copy of Sixteen Candles. And my next door neighbor (*waves to Bridget*) dragged me to her house along with some other girlfriends. She gave me wine and put the movie on. I honestly went into it having zero expectation of enjoying it. I was wrong.
OMG. I’m in love with Jake Ryan.
No really.
To everyone who said you are going to love it – go ahead. Say I told you so. I deserve it!
Jake Ryan in his plaid shirt and khaki pants. Oh yes. That dark, smoldering stare. Le Rawr! And because I am a stalker, I learned Jake Ryan aka Michael Schoeffling now lives in Pennsylvania and makes furniture. Can we say road trip anyone?
The very end – I swoon.
And to top it off, John Cusack, Joan Cusack….and Long Duk Dong
I’m in love. And I didn’t expect to laugh so much.
I assume I’m the only one who was a Sixteen Candles virgin? Anyone other virgins out there?
So I guess this means I need to continue with another 80’s movie. What should be up next?
You need to watch Breakfast Club next! I <3<3<3<3 that movie.
*giggle* Long Duk Dong *giggle*
My vote goes to Ferris –he’s a righteous dude. (I love that movie!!)
Outsiders. Breakfast Club. Ferris. Any. All. Just watch.
They are the Awesome.
LOL. Yup. Jake Ryan…
Some Kind of Wonderful is a personal fave of mine. It’s got the hottest kiss ever.
Glad you enjoyed it so much Mandi! One of my very favourite movie is: Too Wong Foo, thanks for everything, Julie Newmar. It has Patrick Swayze as a drag queen, and I just love it. No idea if it is an 80’s movie.
How about Cry Baby with Johnny Depp?
Haven’t seen either of those! *adds to list*
Lol, you won’t have any reading time left, watching so many movies. I am watching some of those with my 13 y old stepdaughter, which is fun.
YES, Cry-Baby!!! So 90’s camp!! Love John Waters.
Ferris , Some Kind of wonderful , Breakfast club :)
Glad that you enjoyed Jake Ryan
You are awesome for adding Some Kind of Wonderful. I think it’s one of my favorite Hughes movies, ever. Watts? Love! And dude from the detention? Played Casey in the Ninja Turtles movie.
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s a favorite of mine :o)
I would watch St Elmo’s Fire or Breakfast Club – both are really good 80s movie.
Have fun!
Randi
I never saw it but my sister loves it.
Yay on discovering Jake Ryan!!! Yes his is quite hot…he’s also in the movie Mermaids with Cher and Winona Ryder so be sure and add that one to your list ;)
Realllly? *adding*
I love Mermaids. A must see!
I can’t believe I’ve never seen Mermaids!
Jake Ryan is YUM. I love Sixteen Candles. I’d recommend Breakfast Club, although I love Pretty in Pink too.
If you watch Some Kind of Wonderful, the pause-worthy moment is THE kiss. And that’s all I’m saying about that. ;)
I’m all about pause-worthy moments!
oh, Pretty in Pink, Some Kind os Wonderfull, Cocoon, Secret Admirer and please tell you have seen Ghost and Dirty Dancing…
I have seen Ghost and Dirty Dancing! *whew*
My vote goes to Breakfast Club, followed by Pretty in Pink. Come on, Duckie? Blaine, Steff, Iona, those bitchy mean girls, the sad dad, poor girl and rich guy, just a wonderful movie.
The Breakfast Club!!! ZOMG – Judd Nelson was the only one for me. Well and Andrew McCarthy in Pretty in Pink. *swoon* sadly neither one has aged well.
I’m with Samantha & Nicole. Breakfast Club!!!
Also, I loved Better Off Dead. “Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn.” Best skiing advice ever!
I say either Pretty in Pink, because everyone loves Duckie singing some Otis, or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, because who doesn’t love the Sausage King of Chicago?
Married?!
Yes, married,
*snicker*
See – now I know what you are referring to!
<3 80's movies. Welcome to the 80's Mandi. :)
I love 80’s movies. I was in high school then and knew exactly how they felt. I just found a set of John Hughes movies-Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science in a movie case that looks like a old style trapper keeper. I love it. Plus in came along with a CD with the best of soundtrack for all 3 movies.
I also love Jake Ryan. He was dreamy and had a huge crush on him.
YEA!!!
Told you so. lol
Definitely The Breakfast Club, The Outsiders (all swoon worthy boys in there)St/ Elmo’s Fire, Pretty In Pink, Better Off Dead, Goonies, Lost Boys, Fat Times At Ridgemont High, Say Anything
Definitely Ferris just so you can understand the inside jokes from Matthew Broderick’s Honda commercial.
Plus Disney’s CAN’T BUY ME LOVE with a young Patrick Dempsey.
Thank you Kim!! I was wondering why nobody said Can’t Buy Me Love – Love It!!! Also, watch Shag, Pretty In Pink, Breakfast Club, and there are lots more but I can’t think of them right now (having a brain fart!).
O-M-G!!! I. Love. Shag!!! Such an awesome movie, that I started saying, “this is the most fun!” to everyone. I was so lame back then.
I had the hugest crush on Jake when I was a teenager. He’s SO hot!!
My vote for your next 80’s movie is Better Off Dead. It is full of the best quotes. :)
Thanks everyone!! I’m literally writing down all these titles. LOL!
Less Than Zero!! How can I forget that one. Oh lord how I love James Spader.
Definitely watch The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For more Michael Schoeffling I’d recommend Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken. Please say you’ve seen The Princess Bride or Labyrinth – those are classics. Fast Times at Ridgmont High? Weird Science? Better off Dead? Beverly Hills Cop? Girls Just Want to Have Fun? Flashdance? Coming to America? Mannequin? Real Genius? Top Gun? Crocodile Dundee?
Have you seen Dangerous Liaisons? Heartbreaker!
And if you’re in the mood for a tearjerker, coming of age movie (not an 80s movie but early 90s), The Man in the Moon. OMG.
Can you tell my parents didn’t limit my television time?
I’ve seen Princess Bride – I love that movie.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen Crocodile Dundee and I’ve def seen Top Gun.
That is all though. *gulp* – I have a lot of catching up to do!!
Oh my god, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken! I thought I was the only person who had ever seen that movie. Love it.
There are so many that you need to watch. The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Say Anything, Ferris Buller’s Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Can’t Buy Me Love. I know I’m forgetting some but these are all really good!
I’m so glad you finally joined the I <3 Jake Ryan fan club. He is such a hottie! Seriously though, the more you watch the movie, for me, the funnier it gets. You pick up on some things you may have missed the first time.
Just to tell you how much Sixteen Candles is a part of my psyche: I assigned my husband’s ring tone (and this was years ago) on my cell to the Donger singing “Ooohhh sexxxy girrrrlfriend!”
It’s a great way to identify that it’s him, except the one time I left my purse in a waiting room and stepped out for a moment. He must have called because when I returned, everyone in the waiting room felt they needed to call me “Sexy Girlfriend” to let me know I missed a call. OY!
“What’s happening hot stuff?” Love Long Duck Dong!
Welcome to the 80s Mandi! There are so many great 80s movies out there. My vote – Some Kind of Wonderful — yes the KISS! Followed by Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, St. Elmo’s Fire, Oxford Blues (featuring a young and handsome Rob Lowe), Pretty in Pink, anything with John Cusack in it. He ruled the 80s movies!
Marq-isn’t that kiss just so dream! It’s definitely one of my all-time favorites. I love that movie.
That kiss is just insane. Definitely one of the best movie kisses ever.
OK – My Kind of Wonderful just went to top of the list :)
Oh, Sixteen Candles is a classic and you are not alone in loving Jake. He’s awesome.
If you want to delve into the 80’s some more I highly recommend and second, third, etc. the previous comments with both The Breakfast Club…awesomely outstanding movie and Ferris! Save Ferris! They are both classics and must sees!
If you ever, like, totally, like did the valley talk. Like, so watch Valley Girl. Like gag me with a spoon, you won’t regret it.
I…might have seen it? Dunno, I have seen so many movies, but truth be told, I might just have missed it. I know of it of course but seen it..
I feel a movie night coming up at AAD NOLA. (you’re going, right?)
Yes..that would be fun :)
I haven’t actually seen Sixteen Candles. I have seen many of the other movies mentioned in the comments though – The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, Top Gun, Cocktail. One of my sentimental favourites is Girls Just Want to have Fun which stars quite a few big name stars!
If the Internet/wi-fi at the AAD hotel is decent we can have late night movie nights via Netflix & Amazon on my Roku!
I was going to suggest Less Than Zero, but you all beat me to it! Robert Downey Jr–super dark but so good. St. Elmo’s Fire too. You just have to watch them all!!!
Super dark? Oh reallllly
Anything John Hughes is awesome.
Anything.
You’ve already witnessed Sixteen Candles.
I love Better Off Dead with John Cusack. One of my favorite movies of all time.
Better off Dead is THE funniest movie EVER made.
“It’s got raisins in it. You like raisins…”
The Breakfast Club was the first one to come to mind for me. The Goonies and the Karate Kid were ones I watched over and over. And Top Gun. Top. Gun. Still love that movie.
“Say Anything” with John Cusack!!! But any of the other movies mentioned above are great, too. Dirty Dancing, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, too many great classics to list.
Ghostbusters
Stripes
Caddyshack
Young Frankenstein
Back the the Future: I, II, and III.
Agree with several above who mention Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, and Flashdance as well.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off
Say Anything
Some Kind of Wonderful
St. Elmo’s Fire.
I still want to paint my room pink and silk screen Billy Idol on my wall.
I think he was in Mermaids with Cher and Winona Ryder too. Very cute there too.
One that hasn’t been mentioned yet is Roadhouse. I watch it just for Sam Elliot – yummy. I agree completely about the kiss in Some Kind of Wonderful. I have even found a few in the comments that I missed in the 80’s. Thanks!
If you’re in the mood for something romantic, you MUST watch Pretty In Pink–that’s my favorite of all the 80s movies. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is amusing, and Sixteen Candles is funny and sweet. Breakfast Club and Say Anything don’t do anything for me, sorry to say.
You definitely have to give either Ferris Bueller’s Day Off or the Breakfast Club a try next. Both are classics!
I’m late to the Party, but here are my choices…
