We are happy to have Carrie Lofty at Smexy Books today to celebrate her new release, Starlight.
Random Questions With Carrie Lofty
By Carrie Lofty
Q: When was the last time you ate popcorn?
A: I cannot remember, because I really, really don’t like popcorn. A box of Whoppers is my movie theater snack of choice.
Q: What’s your favorite position for sleeping?
A: On my side, hugging a pillow
Q: Best hero trope: the Rake Who Hides Emotions or the Gentleman Hiding a Beast?
A: Both, both, both! Miles from FLAWLESS is definitely the former, while Alex, hero of the second in my Christies series of Victorian romances from Pocket, is such a gentleman’s gentleman. Until he meets Polly Gowan, a Glaswegian lass who tempts him to sexual extremes…and whose safety he’s willing to protect with violence. The poor guy never knew he had it in him!
Q: Can you sing?
A: Yes.
Q: Can you sing well?
A: Pretty well, yeah.
Q: If you could sing them as well as the originals, which three songs would you choose?
A: “Rabbit Heart” by Florence + the Machine, “Angel Standing By” by Jewel [ and “Zombie” by the Cranberries. Those ladies can sing!
Q: Television you absolutely will not miss. Ever. And why?
A: So You Think You Can Dance. I briefly danced Latin ballroom in college, and I’ve always loved dancing and the emotion it can evoke. The skill and dedication it takes to cope with what those competitors endure is amazing. And, frankly, my music collection would be stale as old bread if not for using SYTYCD to find new tracks!
Q: Television you wish was still around?
A: Firefly. And Battlestar Galactica. I don’t generally consider myself a sci-fi fan, probably because I don’t read the genre, but I’ve always loved it when adapted for television and film. The toughest, worthiest, most versatile female characters seem to come from science fiction, and having strong female role models was really important to me when growing up.
Q: Which romance novel is so good that makes you want to curl into a ball and weep for ever, ever being able to write that well?
A: Whispers of Heaven by Candice Proctor, who currently writes historical mysteries as C. S. Harris. That book… Gah. It’s like an architect aspiring to outdo the Eiffel Tower!
Q: Would you pick a favorite paragraph from STARLIGHT to share with us? Set it up, if necessary.
A: Astronomer Alex takes Polly to see the Northern Lights, and it turns out she isn’t the only one who finds it astonishing:
Alex looked to the sky once again. Being able to name each star held nothing to the way he saw the aurora anew. Through her eyes. He had wanted to show her a natural marvel, to give
them both something beautiful to sustain them through what promised to become an ugly few weeks. Instead, she had given him a gift. He saw color like a field of flowers and movement like a dancing angel. Science fell away to reveal only beauty. When he could breathe again, he unconsciously mimicked her soft exhale.
Q: If you’ve been on memorable vacations, which stands out as a favorite?
A: My husband and I took out first post-children vacation in the Riviera Maya in Mexico. It was well after midnight in January, which meant it was relatively chilly by the water. We’d intended to lie on a canopied beach mattress and watch the ocean for a little while, but we wound up falling asleep there, wrapped up together.
Q: What’s next for you?
A: After RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Pick STARLIGHT hits the shelves, I’ll be looking forward to the release of HIS VERY OWN GIRL [ a historical romance set in World War II. It’s not women’s fiction. It’s not literary fiction. It’s a genuine romance, complete with sexy times and a happy ending. Look for it September 4th as a Pocket Star digital original novel. I cannot wait to see how readers respond!
I’ll also be launching a new co-written pseudonym, Katie Porter, with my long-time friend and critique partner, Lorelie Brown. Our "Vegas Top Guns" series of contemporary erotic romances will launch from Samhain on July 31 with the release of DOUBLE DOWN, which is also a RT BookReviews 4½ Star Top Pick. Two more from the series, INSIDE BET and HOLD ‘EM, will follow in August and September. You can learn more about these and future books at our website [
Q: Where can we find you on the internet?
A: At my website, on Twitter and on Facebook
Q: Would you like to give away a book today?
A: Absolutely! I’ll give away a copy of STARLIGHT, and I’ll ship anywhere. Just give me your kookiest random question. I’ll answer the best I can!
