We are happy to have Debra Webb visiting Smexy Today!
Who is Debra Webb? Give us the low down.
I grew up on a farm in northern Alabama and I’ve been writing since I was about nine years old. I love old houses and wandering through salvage stores. My husband and I have two beautiful daughters and three spoiled dogs.
Tell the Smexy Books readers a little about your Faces of Evil series, which includes Obsession, Impulse and your latest release, Power.
The concept came to me several years ago (at the time it was called the Scales of Justice). I wanted to create a scale of evil and write a series focused on that scale beginning with the least heinous of deeds. Mind you, the least heinous of those evils doesn’t exactly equate to light or vanilla when it comes to bad. Even the lowest level of evil can include murder. The seemingly nicest person can snap or be pushed into a situation and end up committing murder. Where that act fits in terms of depravity is all in the motive. As I fleshed out the series I realized it was the motives that intrigued me the most. The impetus for the crime and the differences between the truly heinous villain and the heinous act committed by your average, everyday person. Throw in a focused ensemble cast and I was hooked on writing this series!
What is your favorite part about writing your heroine Special Agent Jess Harris?
The idea that she is a real woman with real feelings. I love her forthrightness and her determination and even that little twinge of uncertainty that always haunts her. I love that she wants to be strong and independent and that all that bravado masks the tiny but relentless fear that she’ll once again be abandoned as she was at age ten when her parents died.
You have moved around a lot spending time overseas and have tried many different careers. Have the places you traveled to and the people you met inspired any story ideas?
Absolutely! I spent three years in Berlin, Germany, before the wall came down. The urgency and desperation coupled with the determination and undying spirit I witnessed first hand plays a big part in the creation of my characters. Having worn lots of career hats allows me to understand so many more worlds. The old saying that you never know the real story until you’ve walked in someone else’s shoes is very true.
You recently were awarded the Warrior Woman award from RT Book Reviews for your courageous struggle and recovery from an accident a few years ago. What words of advice do you have for those who may be facing an uphill struggle right now?
Remember who you are. Never give up on you but also accept that change doesn’t have to be the end…it can be a new beginning.
What is up next for you?
Thank you for asking. I recently turned in RAGE, book four of the Faces of Evil series, and I’m currently working on REVENGE. I’m planning to get to more conferences next year to celebrate the release of the first six books in the Faces of Evil series in paperback! RT Book Lovers convention, RomCon and RWA’s national conference.
You can find out more about Deb and her books at her website. Power, book three in her Faces of Evil series was just released September 4.
