This is the first I’ve read by Laura Kaye. I actually almost didn’t pick this one up because the blurb tells of a one night stand that leads to a pregnancy. Not my favorite set-up. But the cover is so hot (I can’t help myself!) I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did.

Brady Scott who is in the Army Special Forces is home on leave. He grew up with an abusive father and has temper issues himself (although he is nothing like his father). He is close with his sister and recently bought a new townhouse. He is home for three months with orders from the Army therapist to make amends with his father so he can be cleared for promotion. While running one day, he sees a woman crying and can’t help but stop to ask if she is okay. This woman is Joss Daniels, who saw her ex with his new girlfriend at the store and emotions overtook her.  Joss runs a community center for disadvantaged kids, and takes one look at the shirtless, sweaty, and oh so sexy Brady, and thinks this is exactly the distraction she needs.

After a picnic dinner, things get heated as they agree to have a one night stand. Brady doesn’t want any commitment, and Joss is just fine with that. (The one night stand is verra hot too). What they don’t’ know is that Brady actually bought the town house right next door to Joss. They also don’t realize the condom and birth control pills will fail them this night.

Joss actually doesn’t’ discover she is pregnant until halfway through the book, giving them time to get to know each other. Their one night stand turns into multiple night stands before she finds out she is pregnant. Brady though has anger and temper issues, and while he likes Joss and is very attracted to her, he ends up pushing her away a lot, confusing her. When he finds out she is pregnant he doesn’t react well. But I liked that. It was a messy reaction that fit him and I very much feel like he redeems himself for his bad behavior.

What I didn’t like was his rushed declaration of love. It just seemed to come out of nowhere and I wasn’t convinced he actually loved her. It was out of the blue and I didn’t buy it.  We also don’t get a lot of time in this book with the two of them happy and together. They are either just getting to know each other or Brady is working on reestablishing the relationship. Once they truly decide to be together, the book ends. I wanted more happy times with them.

However, this book is hot. Really hot. I like that the author takes a chance with Brady and makes him not super likable at first, and I like how she turns him around. I enjoyed the heroine and even the pregnancy worked for me. I wish the declaration of love and they happy times in the book had been drawn out more. The book needed more pages.  But I’ll read the next by this author for sure.

This one seemed way steamier than the last several Brazen line books I’ve read lately. I was glad Joss made Brady work for his forgiveness after he was such an asshat for most of the book.
