“Kinky Love and the Christmas Spirit” by Joey W. Hill

Every year it happens. I get pulled into the Hallmark Christmas movies. Doesn’t matter how poorly written some of them are, I always ferret out the true gems that make me feel like it’s Christmas. Call Me Mrs. Miracle and Have a Little Faith remain two of my personal favorites. And of course, a love story is usually an important part of these movies. Someone falls in love for the first time, rediscovers love with an old flame, or heals their heart to open it up to love again. But that’s the main point of Christmas, right? Love.

In “Submissive Angel,” my contribution to the O Come All Ye Kinky anthology, Robert has had a rough two years. He lost both his parents within seven months of one another, and he’s been grieving ever since. It’s when he discovers a young man bleeding in an alley, a street kid who applies for a job to work in his vintage toy store, that he’s inspired toward love again. That’s because Robert is a sexual Dominant, and Ange is so clearly a submissive that Robert can’t help but be intrigued.

At Robert’s appearance, the kid, mid-twenties maybe, held up the toy as if he didn’t have one eye swelling shut, a busted lip, and what was definitely a broken nose. Robert had done a couple tours in Afghanistan. Between that and boxing at the local gym for his daily workout, he was very familiar with the look.

“I fixed it, sir,” the young man said earnestly. And he had. He’d hinged the arm back in place on the jockey’s side, and fixed the snapped stand using tape he’d probably fished out of the trash. “It’s temporary, but I can solder the stand and re-attach the arm with wood glue. No one will even know it was broken. I’m good at fixing things people don’t think to fix.”

Robert squatted on his haunches. Putting his fingers on the man’s jaw to hold him still, he took a closer look at the damage. At his touch, his unsolicited applicant went quite still, except for a significant quiver that hit Robert in the gut, particularly when he lowered lashes as white-gold as his hair.

BDSM love stories have always attracted me as a writer and reader because of the emotional intensity of them. In this story, Ange has the generous spirit Robert needs to heal his own soul and trust his instincts as a Master again. When that happens, they can embrace love together. Just like a Hallmark Christmas movie, you get hot cider, snow, and Christmas trees. As well as hot sex and creative uses for Christmas tree lights, Lincoln Logs, and nativity scenes.

Wouldn’t it be great if they took the eight kinky stories in this anthology and produced them as Christmas movies? Then I could have my Hallmark love story plus the intensely emotional BDSM eroticism that would make my Christmas viewing experience just perfect. Okay, Hallmark probably won’t air them, but maybe Showtime or the Playboy channel … Or even better, we can start a new channel, Erotic Romance for Women—ERW, where erotic romance will be done right. Yep, I like that idea. And every year, ERW could do the 12 Days to Christmas and produce some of the best erotic love stories out there. Woot!

ocomekinky

Anyhow, I’ll keep you posted on my little fantasy. However, in the meantime, you can read excerpts from the eight great stories in O Come All Ye Kinky and purchase here. Enjoy!

Here’s the blurb for my story, “Submissive Angel.”

After Robert found Ange bleeding in an alley, he employed the man in his vintage toy store as an act of charity. However, this Christmas, the eccentric young dancer will offer his thanks—and himself—to teach a brokenhearted Master how to open his heart to love again.

And here’s what you can expect to find in the anthology as a whole:

Christmas is a time of love and joy, and the New Year is a time of renewal. But they are also times of stress and strife, family drama, pressure and heartache—a potent mix of high expectations and conflicted emotions. Add in power exchange relationships, kinky gift swaps, and unconventional love in a sometimes unforgiving world, and you have a formula for a sizzling anthology of stories that tug at your heart.

From Ava March’s forbidden Regency love between men, to Katie Porter’s scorching hot contemporary tale of two women discovering holiday happiness, everyone will find a favorite here. Pervertible toys abound: Lambda Literary Award finalist L.A. Witt’s candy cane, Jane Davitt’s wrapping paper and tape, and Alexa Snow’s Christmas candles all please and delight. Newcomer Elyan Smith and fan favorite Kim Dare both celebrate New Year’s Eve with romantic flair and kinky fireworks, while bestselling author Joey W. Hill’s poignant story of discovery and commitment will lead you home.

Whatever your desires, we invite you to explore new fantasies and old with these eight kinky tales of holiday happy endings.

20% of all proceeds from O Come All Ye Kinky will be donated to the Domestic Violence Project of the National Leather Association–International. (If you buy the book, digital or print, from Riptide’s website, more money goes to the charity because we’re not paying third-party vendor fees.)
You can find out more about the anthology and all the stories here.

Joey, I’m actually just about to start your story in the anthology. Your newsletter was the reason I found and how could I resist buying when donations are going to NLA’s Domestic Violence Project.
I love your idea of making these into a Hallmark like Christmas movie And having a channel! I’m a total fiend for cheesy Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movies. Watch them all – good, bad or indifferent.
Ever since I read “Rough Canvas”, I have been a die-hard fan of your writing. Thanks for putting out good and authentic BDSM romance.

I don’t think I’ve ever watched a Hallmark movie. I would much rather read than watch a movie. This anthology looks great.

Clancy, thank you! I’m so pleased you found the anthology through my newsletter, and hope you enjoy all the stories in it. Romance, eroticism and Christmas cheer – I’m such a sappy person, I can’t resist the combination(wink). I’m also delighted to find another person proud to be a Hallmark Christmas movie addict. Even my redneck, testosterone-laden brother gets pulled into them, thanks to my mom getting him hooked! Thanks for looking for more of my work after you read Marcus and Thomas’s story. Their story remains one of my personal favorites. :>

Andrea, I understand. I used to be much more of a reader until I was writing, editing, writing, editing, writing, editing…now movies are my escape from the written word, a different way to enjoy a well told story, without activating my internal editor and going into “work” mode (chuckle). Hope you like the book!

I’ve read Submissive Angel, Joey, and it was a beautiful story. Emotional and sexy and hot and inspiring, that there is love out there to be found, even in an alley.
    Thank-You!!

This was one of the most well written blog posts I’ve ever read–sweet and funny. So I have to ready your story, too. Because the excerpt was exceptional. Thank you!

PS. Hallmark is just too corny for me, lol!

I always forget to reply directly to the comment – my bad, guys! Anyhow, Urb, thank you so much for that great compliment! I hope you enjoy Robert and Ange’s story as much or more (smile). Let me know if it disappoints, because I always welcome reader feedback, but beyond that, I hope you love the other seven stories in the anthology as well.

My brother and I have agreed that some of the Hallmarks are way too simplistic and poorly written, but there are some lovely sentimental ones among the group, like Call Me Mrs. Miracle. And Have a Little Faith with Laurence Fishburne, Bradley Whitford and Martin Landau is just an awesome movie. They tend to show it around the holidays, but it’s really a great movie about faith all year round. Thanks for stopping by the blog!

Steph, thank you, girl – what a lovely thing to say! That’s what I tell people when they call erotic romance porn. In “porn”, thinking and feeling aren’t really a priority (lol) – in erotic romance, if we don’t engage the hearts and minds of our readers, we haven’t done a proper job of telling the story.

You’re the gift that keeps on giving for readers of good romance Joey. Forget all the descriptives, genres, sub-genres…you just tell a great story worth investing in; novel or novella.
I will willingly escape into what ever world you choose to write for us.

Oh and about those movies…I do the same each Christmas, though I have not heard of those you mentioned. Guess I need to get out more.

But Robert and Ange in a movie?? um…YAH…

Aw, Jaycee. You’re too good to me. Thank you! And there are two Mrs. Miracle movies I like. Call Me Mrs. Miracle is about a toy store in New York city (Doris Roberts plays Mrs. Miracle in all of them and Jewel Staite from Firefly stars in that one), and that’s my favorite, but the other one “Mrs. Miracle”(with James van der Beek) is a close second. I think there’s another about ornaments that’s pretty cool. They’re just wonderful feel good Christmas movies.

I’d throw all of those over to see Robert and Ange in a movie of their own, though! (wink)

Hi Joey! I am a total fangirl of yours — the Vampire Queen series is one of my all time favorites.

I’m with you on one of the values of reading and writing BDSM being the ability to delve into some of the truest possible depths of emotion and psychology. It can be romance or just plain old smut, but I love it. Nothing wrong with a little rough stuff just because we like it that way. ;)

Thank you so much for all your work. I can’t wait to read this anthology!

Selena, I’d love to see it happen, but then I’d probably get no writing done – I’d always be watching it!! I think most of us erotic romance authors were born from a desire for the quality reading and viewing material we weren’t getting. If we were given that material, we’d probably be useless (laughter).

Kassandra, they’re a class act, aren’t they? I love a publisher who remembers that it’s as much about turning out quality stuff as it is making money. I’m a business person, so I get the need for the bottom line, but in publishing, there has to be a balance. We owe something to the craft as well as to our livelihoods. I think Riptide does that admirably.
