Ellie has been recently dumped, which has devastated her and made her hide in her house for the last six months. When she hears word that her good friend (and wealthy friend) Penny is engaged to someone who might only be after her money, Ellie feels like it is her job to break them apart. She turns to her brother’s best friend Gideon for help. She has known Gideon for seventeen years and is very familiar with his wealthy, playboy ways. He picks up women and drops them faster than anyone else. But she needs him for a distraction for Penny, and Ellie can be very persuasive. Which is how she finds herself at Gideon’s country house. Penny and Will aren’t coming until the next day, which means she gets to ogle Gideon all by herself. Gideon starts to see Penny in a new light. Not the tomboy teenager she used to be.
I really didn’t like the set-up of this book – the fact that Ellie finds the need to drag Gideon and Will and Penny to a house for a weekend to secretly break up Penny and Will because she doesn’t approve of him. Why not just talk to Penny privately? if she really is her true friend, why be this devious? I was very close to dnf’ing this book after the first chapter. But I decided to give it another shot. I still feel like the Penny/Will plot is the weakest part of this story. Especially how it evolves once Penny and Will get to the house. But I ended up liking Gideon and Ellie’s relationship.
Ellie is very, very lonely and wants a family and someone to share her life with. She knows Gideon can’t be that person due to his playboy ways, but she can’t help being very attracted to him. Gideon himself doesn’t want to hurt Ellie, but he can’t help himself around her either. They start a fling with Gideon thinking it will help build up her self confidence and Ellie thinking she just needs to get out of a rut. But then those pesky feelings get involved and the fling turns into something else.
I wish we could have seen Gideon in a committed relationship for a longer period of time. Especially because of his famous playboy ways. Ellie does question this when they decide to give a relationship a go. He basically says, take a leap of faith. Which is all fine and dandy, but I wanted to see him in the role of a committed boyfriend.
Set in England, I like this author’s voice although I do wish the Penny and Will plot had been different and I had been more convinced of Gideon’s commitment.
