Guest Author Shiloh Walker: Approach with Caution

February 20, 2013 by Mandi 38 Comments

Smexy Books is happy to welcome Shiloh Walker, who also writes under the pen name, JC Daniels.

Five signs the author has had another epic binge at the keyboard, bleeding her eyes out, writing for 10-12 hours straight.

1. The whites of her eyes are no longer white…but brilliant, blood-shot red…it is unknown if this is because of eye-strain or because of what the characters put her through in this book. Sadly, the writer will pass this agony on to you, the reader.

2. There are bald patches on her head, from ripping out chunks of her hair as she tried to tell the characters…NO…it doesn’t have to happen that way! And they insisted, YES…it does! Sadly, the writer will pass the agony on to you…but you decide if you’re going to keep your hair or not.

3. The house is littered with empty Kleenex boxes and there is no milk in the fridge. Why? Because the characters put her through hell, she’s been crying and screaming at the computer and she can’t drive the car when her eyes are bloodshot and she’s bald. Sadly, she’ll pass this agony onto you. Buy milk and Kleenex prior to reading…and wine. And chocolate. (I’m told it comes in handy with Night Blade…I wish somebody had told me that when I was writing it.)

4. Her wrists are about the size of eggplants, swollen from all the hours spent at the keyboard. And she’s out of the anti-inflammatories. But she can’t go to the store…or the doctor. (See sign number 3)

5. Her husband and kids steered clear of her during this odd, possessed state and when she finally emerged from her stupor, they weren’t sure who she was. So if you see them circling a red-eyed, bald woman going…Mom…Mom, who?…that might be the writer. Buy her chocolate and wine. She probably needs it at this point.

Inspired by the hell …err…. Um…interesting period that was my life as I was writing Night Blade. No. I didn’t really pull my hair out. Although thanks to the 12 hour writing days, my eyes were probably pretty blood shot. And we didn’t have a lot of creative cooking…and…well, no…my kids and guy didn’t forget me, etiher.

But I still need the chocolate and wine. Who doesn’t?

NIGHT BLADE

Kit Colbana is always biting off more than she can chew. She has a knack for finding trouble. This time, though, trouble finds her. Someone from her past drops a case into her lap that she just can’t refuse…literally.
People on the Council are dying left and right and she’s been requested to investigate the deaths. The number one suspect? Her lover, Damon. If she doesn’t clear his name, he gets a death sentence. Even if she succeeds? They still might try to execute him. Oh, and she’s not allowed to tell him about the case, either.

The stakes are high this time around, higher than they’ve ever been. Kit may be forced to pay the ultimate price to save her lover’s life…a price that could destroy her and everything she loves.

Excerpt

His voice was a low, rumbling growl.

I heard that tone often enough. It was anger. Not that icy edge I’d seen earlier, but there were a lot of varieties of anger. And I’d faced this one of his before.

“Kit.”

I turned around and I saw it in his eyes.

He knew.

As he came up off the chair, he shook his head. “I’ve been trying to place it all fucking day and it wasn’t until just now that it clicked. You said you had to work with somebody who…what, cloaked? What the fuck is that?”

“It’s what it sounds like, Damon,” I said levelly. The hell if I’d lied. Lies had never come easily to me anyway and if I even tried, he’d know. “I’m working a job. I’m doing the best I can and I can’t talk about it. Let me work it, let me finish it and I’ll explain.”

The roar echoed around the room. Echoed…echoed…until I thought my ears would burst from it.

“Kit. Were you following me?”

Hi, Shiloh! Thank you for opportunity ti participate in giveaway.
I loved Blade Song! I gave it 5 stars, my favorite thing was Damon’s species (I don’t want to ruin for others who didn’t read it), but it’s one of the most beautiful creatures alive. Huh, I thought Kit and Damon left banter in book #1- apparently not. ;) Will we see Goliath in Night Blade?

    Loved the Top 5–hilarious.

Looking forward to NIGHT BLADE–I really enjoyed BLADE SONG. My favorite thing was Kit’s ability with weapons. It cracked me up how her ability to call her blade was messing with Damon’s head.

    Thanks for the excerpt.

Guys, I totally flaked out and forgot this was going up until this morning. Our dog got sick, pretty suddenly and we have to put her to sleep. It’s been a bad week around here and my brain has kind of shut down to everything but the basics.

    I’m really sorry…

Thanks for all the comments, though and all of you who enjoyed Blade Song and are looking forward to Night Blade, you put a much needed smile on my face. Just remember…wine. Chocolate. Kleenex. I’m told group therapy might help, too.

The first book looked interesting to me, so I picked it up hoping I would like it. I didn’t. I REALLY liked it (maybe even loved it!). The action didn’t stop and I couldn’t stop thinking about the characters & where the story was going next after I finished book 1. I can’t wait to see what Kit gets up to in book 2!!
