Favorite Quote: “I got tricks in my jeans,” Earl said, reaching for his zipper. “I got a shape-shifting penis. Wanna see?”
There are Dalvahni demon hunters and demons roaming the earth these days, and in the small town of Hannah all things supernatural seem to gather. Beck is kith – her father a human and her mother demon – and she has caught the eye of demon hunter Conall.
It’s clear that these two have met (in a previous book), but the starting point of this book is strong. I’ve not read this author or series before, and the novel stood alone quite well. While there are teasers for the next book as well as cameos by past characters I assume she featured, the novel has a clear story to tell.
Beck is hoping to avoid Conall, swears she hates him in fact but she folds quickly seduced by his good looks and persistence. Conall on the other hand, has been interested in Beck and has wanted a relationship with her for some time. When the two do get together things heat up quickly and Beck has a hard time calling it off.
Hell, that orgasm had probably saved other people’s lives, because all that bottled-up sexual tension could have exploded and hurt someone. It was what you might call your sacrificial orgasm. She’d taken one for the team, maybe even one for humanity.
She was a frigging saint.
I enjoyed Beck as a character, a female that is strong, doing her own thing, and comfortable in her own skin and with her powers. So often the female lead is weaker than the male in paranormal romance and at no time did I feel this way about her. She has a warrior’s spirit – and she can nurture those she considers her family as well as she can take out her enemies. The author shows us repeatedly how Beck strives to do the right thing, champion the underdog, and how hard she fights to keep her town a safe and demon-free one. She isn’t super feminine and she doesn’t apologize for it or care what others might think about how she runs her life. She just takes care of business and kicks ass – I love that in a heroine!
A lot of new twists get thrown at Beck and not just her new love interest. She finds that she actually has a twin brother, Evan. His presence in her town is not a good thing, there are dark happenings and demons up to no good. I really liked the scenes between the siblings – including this one where Beck was convincing Evan she had a bad childhood. Or did she?
Evan laughed. “Please. You had a home and plenty to eat. I’ll bet your mean old daddy never broke your arms and legs or burned you with cigarettes until you begged him to stop. I’ll bet you got to go to school and learn to read and write, instead of running from place to place to avoid the police.”
Evan was an interesting character and I bet that we’ll see more of him in the future. There is clearly more to him than we saw in this book, I hope to read more about him in the futue. As for Beck and Conall – while I enjoyed the adventure they took me on and loved the big cast of characters that ended up coming into the bar and becoming a part of their lives, their romance left me cold. I did not feel there was any heart, any real romance to their story. While they did stay quite busy running around and keeping the people of Hannah safe from demons and threats I simply wasn’t convinced of the true love happily ever after ending we are spoon fed. It didn’t quite fit for me.
Despite the meager romance, this book had a nice mix of action, humor, and intensity that I found satisfying. I enjoyed this book and I think fans of humorous paranormal romance looking for new books to read should look into this author and series. It’s nicely done.
