I’m very pleased at this last installment in the Impulse trilogy, which follows the shy, handyman Derrick, and his accountant lover, Gavin. When these two first met in book one, they couldn’t have been more different. Derrick had been celibate for ten years, gay but never having been with a man. He was a shy, awkward loner. Gavin was coming out of a controlling, abusive relationship with the fear he could be HIV positive. But somehow these two meet, fall in love and together face an uncertain future with Gavin’s health. Having to wait six months for the final HIV test, we get the results in this book and we learn their future together. I won’t tell you the results, but it is a satisfying ending for this couple.
I really enjoyed book one, Inertia as we come to see how their relationship starts. Book two felt a little more like a filler, just stuffed with sex scenes but I’m happy to say this book felt very well rounded. I love how the author writes both of these characters. Derrick had lived such a solitude life, and he struggles with coming out of his shell. He gets totally embarrassed, yet very turned on when Gavin plays the more dominant role in bed. He is a big, gentle giant. Super sweet and lovable, yet just aggressive enough to give Gavin what he needs. Gavin on the other hand is struggling with trusting someone again. His former lover broke that trust, and Gavin doesn’t always understand why and how Derrick can love him.
What is really addressed in this book is Gavin’s possible HIV infection. His three month test comes back clean, but that doesn’t mean his six-month test will come with the same result. Gavin feels ashamed and worries Derrick will flee if the test comes back positive, no matter what reassurances Derrick gives. I liked the angst this places in the story.
With all of that being said, the author gives us some very, very hot love scenes. Intense and super dirty.
“Don’t tell me you don’t want it,” Gavin continued, nibbling Derrick’s earlobe between whispers. “The danger. The excitement. The idea someone might see, or even just figure it out. That they might know what we’ve done and how much you loved it. See, babe, I know your secret. You act like you don’t want anyone to notice you, but all your modesty is a sham. You love getting away with it, smug in the knowledge that no one around you has a clue how kinky you really are. It makes you so hot you could cream your pants just thinking about it.”
The naughtiness level in this book is very high. Smexy approves.
It would be best to read this trilogy in order so you can experience their relationship from the start. I just learned today that Amelia Gormley has signed a contract with Riptide and it looks like she will have a highland m/m novella coming out in May. I’m looking forward to it.
