Jayda Swenson’s late husband created a type of meth drug that is still around to haunt her. Trying to move on with her life after a horrible accident and bad marriage, Jayda’s problems are just getting worse. Unknown to her, after her accident the doctor that treated her injected her with the blood of Isis to save her life. She knows she is a little different now due to the unusual color of her blood and some other physical abnormalities, but she tries to pretend nothing is wrong.
Jayda’s new coworker is paramedic Ben Tierney. Ben is Ahn-Ra, which means a soul watcher. He gives souls a little extra energy to boost them up into the afterlife. But he has recently had an accident and lost most of his powers. He has just been kicked out of The Concelium, a secretive place that produced the Ahn-ra and a place he felt at home. It was there he learned to hunt and kill demons. He actually thought he had removed a powerful demon from society years ago, but now this demon is back. And it has its eyes set upon Jayda.
I thought Blood of Isis was a pretty fun book. I liked the way the author writes both Jayda and Ben. Jayda is mistrustful of men and relationships after her husband turned out to be a dangerous drug addict. She is also dealing with a lot of personal stuff after her bad accident, and is just trying to put her life back together to actually have one.
Ben is angered and saddened that he has lost his powers and can no longer perform the demon hunting and energy manipulation he has done his whole life. I liked how he gave Jayda a hard time about the way she eats so healthy or how skittish she can be. These two were a nice pair and have a sexy romance with good chemistry. I think the author really lets us get to know both Ben and Jayda – they are well fleshed out characters.
I would have given this book a higher grade had the world unfolded a bit better for me. I think there is a lot of information dumping in the beginning of this book. it was hard to wrap my head around everything Ben is and used to do plus everything that happened with Jayda in the past. The people getting hurt and the action surrounding this didn’t always flow great for me. I also got frustrated when supernatural things would happen to Jayda (and/or Ben) and they wouldn’t discuss it. Jayda would just let stuff go and I think it would have made more sense if she had demanded answers.
All that aside, this is a pretty good paranormal romance. I like this author’s voice.
