Honoria Duchamp is a widow who owns a bookstore that has been in her family for a long time. She loves her little place of work. One day while high up on a ladder trying to reach a book, she falls but lands on a gentleman. Lord Devin appears to be just browsing in her store, but he actually has a reason for being there. He is assigned (more liked forced or blackmailed) into investigating Nora’s part in distributing pamphlets of “incendiary materials” which are threatening his blackmailer’s industry. Devin is assigned to “investigate and neutralize” this threat. But when he meets Nora, he can’t believe this meek woman poses any type of threat to anyone.
I wanted to read this one because Amara Royce is a debut author and the blurb states that Devin is half of Nora’s age (I believe Nora to be 40 in this book). Unfortunately I had a hard time with this book. It’s slow. Really slow at times. I think what makes it slow is that both Nora and Devin are so dry. They are both so serious and a little stuffy. I love when one character has this trait and is paired with someone more silly or outgoing. But in this case, two dry characters makes for a not so exciting book. There is the suspense with Devin and how he is forced to stop the threatening materials Nora prints at her shop. But even that storyline isn’t fleshed out well.
The romance that develops between them is nice. I like that they start to show more emotion when love enters the picture. But otherwise, this one is just okay. I needed something more in the book to keep my attention.
