We are happy go to have author Cynthia Sax at Smexy today. She has an erotic trilogy out this month. He Watches Me released yesterday, and the next two are out later this month.
Who is Cynthia Sax? Give us the low down.
Cynthia Sax writes contemporary, SciFi, and paranormal erotic romance short stories and novellas for Avon Impulse, Ellora’s Cave, Changeling Press, and Loose Id. She loves scarred beastly heroes, her wonderful hubby, reading buddy email, and Nutella, not in that order.
He Watches Me features a very secretive billionaire hero, and a heroine who is more plain and comes from a difficult childhood. What inspired you to pair these two together?
Both Blaine and Anna have secrets. Anna deliberately wears baggy clothes and goes without makeup. She does her best not to draw attention to herself, seeking to disappear. Blaine also hides, choosing to live in L.A., a city filled with movie stars and other more glamorous attention-seeking people.
Neither of them trust easily. They’ve both been betrayed in the past and have erected barriers around their souls.
When Blaine and Anna meet, they realize they are kindred spirits. Blaine sees something in Anna no one else does and they understand each other. The chemistry between them sizzles. But both of them continue to cling to their secrets.
Blaine likes to watch. From his pool chair. From his security footage. He is a voyeur extraordinaire (seriously sexy!). Book two in this trilogy (out July 9th) is called, He Touches Me. I assume he makes a move in the next story? Why do readers find voyeurs so sexy in romance books? Is it because it’s more taboo or that he just sits there puffing on that cigar giving orders?
No one fantasizes about being ignored. Everyone secretively or not-so-secretively wants their lovers to admire them. When we take off our clothes, no matter what we look like, we want our special someones to lust after us, to love all of us, every curve and every imperfection.
In Anna’s case, she doesn’t trust anyone to touch her. She has a vivid imagination so He Watches Me is still pretty dang hot, but they ease into their unusual relationship. Anna is an exhibitionist (someone who likes to be watched). When Blaine accepts this about her and shares one of his secrets – that he’s a voyeur, she opens up to him about other issues.
Blaine does touch Anna in He Touches Me. Oh boy, does he! And because Blaine has watched Anna pleasure herself in He Watches Me, learning all of her naughty secrets, he sets off some serious sexual fireworks.
Anna doesn’t have a lot of self esteem. She hides behind big clothes and doesn’t have a lot of money to spend on frivolous stuff. What kind of personal journey can we expect from her over the series?
Anna has been betrayed again and again by the people she cares about. She figures it is easier to hide, to close herself off emotionally from others, than to be hurt again. It is less about a lack of self esteem than a sense of self protection. She cares about others… perhaps too much.
Anna also has a lot of pride. She finds it difficult to accept help from others. While she was a teenager, she lived off the charity of others and she found this emotionally painful. She vowed to be independent… which is difficult when you’re a struggling new graduate dating a powerful billionaire.
As Anna develops feelings for Blaine, she is forced to make choices. Does she rejoin the rest of the world or does she remain hidden away, emotionally safe? When her past catches up to her, will she run again, avoiding conflict and judgment, or will she fight for what she wants?
We see how she grows as a person by what she wears and by how others react to her.
What was your favorite part of the story to write? Besides the remaining two installments in this series, do you have plans for other upcoming books?
I love adding layers to stories and He Watches Me is perhaps the tightest story I’ve ever written. In this novella (100 pages), every sentence works extra hard. Anna’s clothes, the weather, the wildlife (especially the moths) mean something. We can read the story as a fun light erotic romance or we can delve into the different layers.
And oh boy, do I have a serious crush on Blaine! Spending my days writing about him was no hardship, that’s for certain. Blaine never did give up all of his secrets.
I’m currently working on Henley’s story. We meet this big scarred man in He Claims Me. He’s the extremely serious head of cyber security at Blaine Technologies and has a monstrous reputation. No one messes with Henley.
