Audra Pearsall has a father in the midst of dementia and for awhile now has been signing and publishing his historical documents as him. When his colleagues show up and start to question his supposed absence, Audra gets scared. She recently inherited a cabin out in Heartbreak Creek, Colorado and decides to pack up her father and people that work for her and head out west. When she gets there, the two room cottage is in bad repair. She also learns the land she owns is wanted for the railway, and she must decide if she wants to give it up.
Ethan Hardesty works for the railroad and tries to convince the stubborn Audra to give up her land so the railway can continue to grow. When violence breaks out in the form of vandalism, fires and then murder, Ethan realizes Audra might be the target of someone viscous.
This book did not work for me and that makes me sad to say. I have adored Kaki Warner books in the past, some making my “best of” lists at the end of the year. Usually her characters are so full of energy and wit. I smile, laugh and swoon as they make their way in the wild west. But this time I didn’t experience any emotions. It a very slow book and I just couldn’t muster up any energy to root for the characters.
I also felt that Ethan and Audra didn’t have any spark of chemistry. It all just fell flat.
If you want to try this author, I recommend many of her previous titles. They are so well done and charming. Let’s hope the next in this series works better for me.
