When Nic’s brother goes missing, she decides to do anything to find him, even if that means calling up a demon. Well – the demon part is purely an accident. She starts reading from an old text and all of a sudden, a sexy guy is in her room. Stunned, she knocks him out, but not for long. Arden in a demon and a very sexy one at that. After doing some investigating, he knows who took her brother, the very bad demon named Sorro. Sorro lives in the fourth level of hell, a very dangerous place Arden doesn’t want to go to. (Arden lives on the first level with his brothers and father. A pretty nice demon actually – well, as nice as demons can truly be). Arden decides he will help her under one condition – that Nic sleep with him when all is said and done (ok, so maybe isn’t is that nice). He also secretly plans to use Nic as a means to become a full demon. He wants to get her to the fourth, hand her over and embrace his full powers.
This story didn’t work for me for a couple of reasons. First I feel like we jump into the plot so quick, we don’t get to know Nic very well. She is willing to literally go to Hell for her brother and have sex with a demon (not even knowing supernaturals existed prior to this) all within the first few pages. I needed more background and history on her and her brother.
Secondly, and most importantly for me, I never believed in their romance. I think Arden is portrayed as a demon pretty well but I never felt like he truly loves Nic or that Nic truly loves him. They have hot sex, but the emotions didn’t carry forth to me. Would Nic truly have sex with this guy she just met? This quote really stood out to me:
How was it possible that she could want him so much when she despised him?
This frustrated me. They would get intimate, and then hate each other, then get intimate, then hate each other. Until finally they got intimate and realized they loved each other. It just didn’t work for me.
While I was intrigued by the plot/mystery in the first half of the book, I lost interest in the second half.
