Interview with Avery Flynn

January 28, 2014 by Mandi 4 Comments

Avery Flynn has a brand new book and series out! High-heeled Wonder released yesterday and she is stopping by Smexy for a chat….

FBHeadshotWho is Avery Flynn? Give us the low down.

I live a super glamorous life that includes all the bon bons I can eat (never gaining an ounce) and daily personal visits from Jon Hamm. … Wait, what? You know that’s a total lie? Okay, you caught me there. :)

In reality, I’m married to a hockey-addicted husband (Go New Jersey Devils!), have three mostly wild kids (the 11-year-old diva, the 8-year-old Ferris Bueller clone and the 5-year-old dictator) and I wouldn’t make it half a day without coffee. Also, I’m addicted to Oreo cookies. YUM!

You have a new series coming out called Killer Style. Murder? Fashion? How do these two go together?

How do they NOT go together? The egos, the ambition, the total fabulousness—all perfect for a fun, smexy romantic suspense series. Plus it totally gives me a reason to spend way too much time on fashion blogs and calling it research. Oh yeah, and all the trips to DSW. I’m trying to talk the accountant into accepting those receipts as work expenses. Three guesses as to how that turns out.

The blurb states that Tony and Sylvie get along as well as oil and water. Is this a case of they hate each other they love each other? More importantly, do we get angry sex? *wink*

Angry sex… le sigh. Oops, sorry. TMI? Welcome to my world. Tony and Sylvie are total opposites. Or at least it seems like they are when they first meet. He thinks she’s just a fashionista who has never had a day of heartache. She thinks he’s the hot Italian PI from across the tracks who is nothing but trouble. In reality (or at least this fiction’s reality), they’re a lot more alike than either would like to admit in the beginning.

Sylvie runs a popular fashion blog and it sounds like she may dish out some unwelcome criticism of more unfortunate fashion choices. Is fashion something that inspires you?

Oh yes. I think fashion has a lot in common with romance novels. Both are seen (wrongly) as frivolous things for chicks when they really speak to important parts of who we are as people and are ways of expressing the intangible something that makes us human.

Give us a short excerpt or a favorite quote.

Here’s a scene inspired by a conversation I had with the Fab Mr. Flynn when we were first dating. He’s an Italian from New Jersey so him calling pasta sauce gravy threw me for a loop.

Excerpt of High-Heeled Wonder by Avery Flynn:

“Do you have any garlic?” he called.

Sylvie glanced up from her laptop and leveled her slightly bleary green eyes on him. She’d been sitting there in her own world, trying to get the rest of the week’s posts uploaded before she had to give up her laptop to his computer guy, Carlos. For the past two hours she’d been typing away and muttering that gray being the new black was the stupidest thing she’d ever heard. He’d always figured black was the only black, so he’d stayed quiet.

“Garlic?” Her breathy voice twisted something inside him.

“Yeah, you know, it’s a white bulb thing. You use it for cooking.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m laughing so hard here you’re making my sides hurt.” She tilted her head back and rolled her shoulders before arching her back in a long stretch that lengthened specific parts of Tony’s anatomy.

Peeling his gaze away, he forced his gaze back to the can of tomatoes in his white-knuckled grip. But his ears, attuned to her every move, caught the scrape of her chair on the tile floor, the soft patter of her feet, and the creak of the refrigerator opening. The mental image of her ass as she bent over in those second-skin-like yoga pants as she searched the fridge was almost worse than seeing it in real life.

A soft giggle brought him out of his fantasy. That sliver of difference between his imagination and the even-better reality hit him smack on jaw.

She stood with one hip cocked and a smirk on her face. “Careful there, Iron Man, or you’ll dent the can.” She tossed the garlic bulb to him like a pop fly.

He stifled a groan and caught the garlic before it hit him between the eyes. “Thanks.”

She hopped up onto the island and swung her legs over the edge. “You’re cooking?” She swept up her thick hair into one hand then looped it around until it formed a complicated knot, which she locked into place with a pencil.

His fingers itched to pluck it out and watch the honey strands fall past her shoulders. The lip of the tomato can bit into his palm. “Making gravy.”

“Turkey or meatloaf?”

“Pasta.”

“You mean pasta sauce?”

“Yeah. Gravy.”

She jumped down from the island and tugged a yellow apron from a drawer, pulling it over her head. “I just uploaded my last post. What can I do to help?”

The apron strings circled her waist, drawing his attention to her curves. He had to get the woman out of the room or he was going to go all Hulk on the defenseless tomato can. “I got it.”

“No doubt about that, but I need something to do that doesn’t involve stalkers, murderous drivers, or the trend of empire waists in the latest collections.” She yanked a stock pot from a cupboard. “Come on, throw a girl a bone.”

So tempting. If she only knew…

What’s up next for you?

Tons! I’m doing readings at the Lady Jane’s Salons in Silver Springs and New York, giving workshops at the Maine Romance Writers’ retreat and Romance Writers of America National Convention, and I’m going to RT’s Book Lovers Conference. This will be my first time at RT so any advice is welcome. I hear there’s plenty of dancing and book talk, so you know I’m looking forward to that!

When Sylvie’s stalker almost runs her over in broad daylight, Tony must pose as her boyfriend to infiltrate the close-knit fashion community. In a world full of overblown egos and cutthroat ambition, Sylvie and Tony must work together to find her stalker before she ends up with a literal knife in the back.
