“When Sierra Brennan opened the door to her new house in Chicago, she didn’t expect to find a naked man standing inside.”
Not just naked either – but a vampire named Ronan searching the house for the key to save his sister’s soul. Sierra is used to the paranormal – she’s turned her ability to see ghosts into a lucrative writing career – but can she handle vampires, witches, and all that this Chicago neighborhood has to throw her way?
I keep reading this series because the author has such a promising voice, and I like her light and fun take on paranormal romance. That said, this book suffers much like previous installments have in that a lot is said, a lot is going on, and yet nothing happens.
The plot is so thin and so lacking in anything that feels compelling or urgent that it creates this lackluster story where there could be so much more. Instead of giving these two characters a rich and interesting adventure to go on, things happen, there is sex (because of course, it’s the only way to ensure her freedom!), and they fall in love.
For almost half the book they are fighting against each other, hating that they share a space – then I turn a page and boom. He’s revealed what he is to her and she’s blurting out that she sees dead people. While I did enjoy myself reading this story, I constantly found that I was disappointed by the lack of finesse with which it was told.
“I’m not into Chinese takeout.”
“High salt content, I know,” she said. “But I am such a sucker for shanghai noodles, moo shu pork, and pot stickers.”
She set her food on the dining table, took a seat, then opened the white container and used the chopsticks to eat some of the noodles.
“They look like worms,” Ronan said.
“Cutting the noodles would be bad luck since they represent a long life.”
Ronan snickered.
Ronan was an indentured vampire servant for many, many years and is supposed to be this dark and brooding character. Yet he snickers? I don’t think so, and it is details like this not to mention scenes that do not advance the plot or add any complexity to the characters or story that have me unable to recommend this book to you.
If you’re wondering why I bother still reading this series, it is because I remain optimistic that this author has the ability to give us something fun and light yet rich and rewarding. One word of warning about this book in particular is that it definitely does not stand alone. There is a lot of reference to previous characters as well as the rules of this particular world that are not explained and I believe would be confusing and frustrating to a reader trying to pick up from this point.
If you want a very light PNR with some smexy times about a group of vampires living in modern day Chicago; then perhaps this book will be to your liking. As for me I believe I need to let go of this series and the hope that there will a story that lives up to the potential I see in this author and her vampire filled world.
