What struck me initially about this book was the set-up and my dislike of it. Elisa is a dating coach, owning her own business which is still getting off the ground. She not only plays matchmaker but she really spends a lot of time with her clients to point out what they do right and wrong when it comes to love. She finally lands a Hollywood client, an up and coming actress and is excited to see her business expand. But first she must deal with this actress, Celine and all her drama (drama I got annoyed with). Elisa flies to St. Barts with Celine to have a one-on-one weekend with her to focus on dating. While on the plane, Elisa see an old crush.
Brett is actually on the plane with Celine. He met her 24 hours previously at a drug store and she invited him to go the island and he says yes. (this is the part where I started to say, huh? This set-up doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. It seems too silly.). So now, Elisa has to spend all of this time with a former-crush all the while trying to salvage her dating coach weekend with the paparazzi in tow.
I like get-a-way romances and the fact that Elisa and Brett have some history worked for me. I just wish there had been a different way for them to meet on this island – the entire Celine storyline didn’t work for me. She is your stereotypical flighty, pampered actress and I didn’t like her character at all. She detracted from the story.
The focus on Elisa and Brett was much more fun. They have good chemistry, even if it is a bit predictable. Brett is known as a one-night stand type of guy and Elisa realizes this, although she wishes he was more commitment oriented. But they reconnect and move their mostly friendship relationship to the bedroom. It’s fun at times but again, gets weighed down by the other story lines. I also didn’t love the fight/conflict at the end but the very end was sweet.
Rating: C, maybe a C+.
