A hundred years after vampires revealed themselves to the masses, the world is still recovering from the hysteria and war that devastated much of the Earth. And though peace has been brokered between the human and vampire nations, it is tumultuous at best.
Orphaned at the age of ten, Coraline Conwell has struggled to survive a turbulent existence growing up alone on the harsh streets. Until a wealthy man provides an escape from her vagrant life by offering his hand in marriage. Out of place in the upper-crust world, Cora has done her best to adapt to her new role as wife, but when her husband is brutally murdered, she is ripped from her secure life at the hands of the Vampire Enforcement Agency.
Now her survival teeters on the whim of a brutally handsome vampire named Mason as she is hunted by those who would see her dead. She must keep unwanted desires for the sexy vampire from leading her down a dangerous path while she discovers there is more to this world, and herself, than she could have ever imagined
The blurb sets up this book pretty well. Cora’s husband was involved in black-market trading of vampire blood (unknown to her) and when he gets murdered and the assassins come after Cora, the vampires that were observing Cora and her husband, take her into protective custody. Let me stop really quick and say – even though we don’t get to meet Cora’s husband, he intrigued me. I was kinda bummed he had to die. Anyway – moving on. Mason is a good-guy vampire that had been crushing on Cora ever since he laid eyes on her. Although he doesn’t have to protect her, he takes her away to a safe house. During this time, he isn’t sure who to trust as the bad guys keep finding them. There is also a big reveal/twist about Cora.
First of all, while Cora and Mason fall in love and have a HEA of sorts, this book has a very abrupt ending. I also sniff a love triangle forming in the second book. So there is that.
This is kind of your standard vampire romance book. Human heroine fears vampire hero, then learns to trust him, blood is exchanged back and forth and an accidental bond develops. Oopsie! There are trust issues and hot sex. I would have liked to learn more about this world. The vampires have taken control but we don’t get a ton of backstory on this. There are bad guys after Cora and I would have liked to see more of them. They get attacked but we don’t get a lot from the villains.
Knox, a bad-boy vampire is introduced but he remains more of a mystery. Basically this book is setting up future books. It was an okay story, but be aware that you won’t get the full story. I’m not sure it excites me enough to continue to the next book.
