I am a huge fan of it Kit Rocha’s Beyond series. A post apocalyptic erotic romance that celebrates the choice of freedom in all aspects of life. Sex, violence, power, and death all circle in this incredibly powerful tale of a young woman who escapes a life of servitude only to find that true freedom comes from within her. I love the strength and equality of the characters who are portrayed in the series. Both the men and women are strong, intelligent, and will do anything for each other. Rocha does a fabulous job of promoting that sex is nothing to be ashamed of. It doesn’t matter if you’re as vanilla as freshly poured cream or as dirty as a veteran porn star, as long as it’s given and taken willingly, then fly that freak flag proudly. And boy, do they ever. Menages, orgies, exhibition, voyeurism, and some erotic BDSM all balance well with intriguing well plotted storylines.
Beyond Solitude is a strong character focused novella that takes place at the same time as Beyond Jealousy; clueing us into what was happening in the background during Cruz’s, Rachel’s, and Ace’s “courtship.” It lightly drifts between the Sectors Two and Four, giving us some background on the workings of Sector Two. Focusing on Ford and Mia, we see two damage individuals who both lost something precious and are working hard to find it again.
Sector Two is informally run by Orchid brothel owner, Cerly. We have learned bits and pieces about her through the series and the overall opinion is she is tricky, sneaky, and amoral. Lex and Jade, two O’Kane members were former Orchid inhabitants who both escaped and fled to Sector four. Like Lex, Mia’s parents sold her to the Orchid House in hopes she would have a better life. Trained to be the perfect mistress, Mia escapes after years of despicable treatment by her patron. But she knows Cerly and her patron will come looking for her and she needs to solidify her place somewhere, hopely Sector Four, if she has any hope of remaining free. Lex offers Mia a job as Ford’s assistant and the sparks between them start flying at first meeting.
Don’t mess with my files.”
She didn’t falter, didn’t even blink. “Then tell me what to do instead.”
If I were an asshole… He waved the bottle of whiskey at her. “You could start by letting me drink half of this and jerk off so I can get some sleep.”
That snapped her teeth together—for about five seconds. “If you’re self-conscious about doing that with me in the next room, I could take some work home.”
“Self-conscious?” He dropped the bottle on his desk and unbuckled his belt. “I’ll lay it out right here, buttercup, if you like to watch.”
Her gaze flicked to his hands, and he got that flash of tongue he’d been waiting for as she wet her lips. “I wouldn’t be watching. I’d be working.”
Filing papers like there was nothing more interesting going on? Fuck that. “Bullshit.” Ford tugged open the top button on his jeans. “It may be a little battered these days, like the rest of me, but my ego’s not dead. If I start stroking my dick right in front of you, you’re damn sure gonna be paying attention. Not just watching—riveted.”
The chemistry between them is instant and the sex is exquisitely explicit. Mia’s and Ford’s story reminded me a little of Dallas’s and Lex’s though not as volatile. Ford, like Dallas, is a possessive sensual man who wants to make the world a better place for the woman he is coming to see as his own and solve all her problems. Which, of course, causes more problems. Mia, like Lex, had her freedom taken from her at an early age and struggles to regain the parts of herself that were stolen. She needs to claim her individuality on her own terms and not as an extension of someone else’s wants and needs. This becomes the crux of the story.
“Help her earn her ink, and then she’ll have the kind of power no one can take away.”
Dirty and raw with an action packed storyline, Beyond Solitude is the perfect sexy peek back into the wild world of the O’Kane’s until the next full length novel releases-Beyond Addiction-which is Trix and Finn’s story.
Beyond Solitude is currently only available in a nine story bad boy biker anthology-Alphas After Dark-though it may release on it’s own at a later date. Alphas After Dark is available for $.99 on AMZ and B&N for a limited time.
