I had never read Macy Beckett before and when I saw this was the start of a new series, I decided to give it a try. I didn’t dislike this book – there are some cute moments that made me laugh and a sexy romance that turns romantic. But it also felt a little over the top with all of the curse stuff.
For close to 100 years, the men in the Dumont family of New Orleans have not married. According to legend and lots of ongoing gossip, it’s all Allie Mauvais’s fault. Okay, maybe not Allie, but her family. Allie’s great-great-grandmother was a voodoo priestess and apparently put a curse on the Dumont men to be unlucky in love. In high school, Allie and Marc Dumont shared a kiss, and the next day he broke out with boils beneath his boxers. Marc never asked out Allie again, fearful of this curse. Allie doesn’t believe it for a single second and gets sick of men crossing the street when theysee her. She puts her head down and has worked hard to open her own bakery.
Marc now runs his family’s riverboat cruise business, something he is very proud of. But getting ready for his first voyage as captain, bad luck hits hard.
Marc pushed both palms against the air. “Hold up a minute.” Everything had been fine when he’d left yesterday. “When did all this happen”
The three shared a quick glance, and Pawpaw guessed, ” ‘ Bout thirty minutes ago.”
“It was the damnedest thing” Alex said. “Like a shit storm blew into town and opened up right on top of us. It all happened at once.”
“All of a sudden,” Nick added. “When it rains, it pours.”
“Half an hour ago?” Marc whispered to himself.
Wasn’t that about the time he’d crossed paths with Allie Mauvais? That’s what he got for standing on the same side of the street with her. Maybe her great-great-grandmother knew all the filthy things he’d wanted to do with Allie.
Things break and people quit, including his pastry chef – but guess who shows up as a replacement? Allie has always wanted to meet the renowned chef on this riverboat and now is her chance to put her pastry skills to the test. But the bad luck keeps coming – and soon it’s too much for even the chef to take. Is it pure coincidence or is Allie truly causing a mystical curse?
Well, I’d like to believe it’s all coincidence but in this book you may scratch your head a bit. The curse plays a very big part in this book. It follows Marc and Allie around like a big dark rain cloud. Allie thinks it’s all hogwash. At her bakery, she plays up the voodoo heritage by reading bones for customers – but she uses day-old Popeye chicken bones and just goes by the verbal and physical clues her customers walk in with. Marc on the other hand – his family has been warning him for years about this curse, and it’s more real for him. The antics this curse creates is a lot. All the mishaps became a little too much to take. I just got tired of it all after awhile. I did like the New Orleans setting and the fact that a lot of this book takes place on a riverboat – that’s fun. But I wasn’t expecting this book to be alllll curse.
Marc and his brothers (his father has five or six kids with as many women) are all players. I’m pretty sure they all have slept with as many women as possible. Sex is pretty much all they think about. I could have done with a little less of that. Marc turns out to be a really nice guy, but enough already about how many women you and your siblings have slept with.
I liked Allie – people constantly try to tear her down and she stands pretty strong. I like that she was confident in the romance department and sets out to get Marc with her head held high. For all of Marc’s sexual conquests, Allie takes a lot of the lead in this one.
If you are looking for something light-hearted, rooted in voodoo magic like only New Oreleans can deliver, you might like this one. It was a little too much for me.
