Angie left her home town in Rhode Island ten years ago under unhappy circumstances. Her mother was an alcoholic, a path Angie started going down as well. Her love, a guy named Nick, got a girl pregnant when they were on a break, and he chose his own life over one with Angie in it. Now ten years later, Angie’s life is still in turmoil. Her almost ex-husband is an out of control alcoholic and Angie is pregnant with their child. Done with putting up with him, she demands a divorce and decides to move back to her hometown and live with her supportive aunt. It only takes her minutes of being in town to run into Nick, who is now a cop. His son Jack is ten years old and Nick is single. Not having any contact with Angie the past ten years, he wants to know where she has been and what she has been doing. All Angie wants is to settle down, find a job and get her life in order.
The set-up of this story opens up many possibilities for drama and angst. Lovers reunited, alcoholism, pregnancy, a hero that is a cop (always a good thing). And while I liked the set-up and Angie is a pretty strong heroine, what noticeably lacks in this story is the passion. The romance. These two come across as reuniting their friendship, but I never felt the romantic love between them. Nick feels very overprotective of Angie, especially because she is pregnant and has an ex-husband who is not a great guy. It’s one thing to be protective and want to help her, it’s another thing to turn that into a love affair where he can’t live without her. I needed more moments with the two of them together – realizing they were falling in love. Even the first time they have sex after reuniting was kind of just there. I needed more fireworks.
I think if Nick would have had some buddies he confides in and trades jokes with and if Angie had more of a girlfriend support system, that would have added to the book too. I liked the characters, I just needed more of a reason to believe in their romance.
