I’m a fan of M/M suspense romances involving an in the closet male (usually a cop or detective) and the one man he can’t seem to stay away from. Usually angst filled dramas with some heartbreak, some laughter, and lots of smexy times. I just recently discovered Kaje Harper’s Life Lessons series and devoured the first book in the series-Life Lessons- in about 2 hours. A great story that deals with the ramifications of being forced to stay in the closet due to job and/or family. The romance blends well with the suspenseful mystery and I really enjoyed that Harper doesn’t try to wrrap everything up in a pretty sparkly bow in an effort to give readers an HEA. This relationship is a work in progress for many reasons and Harper stays true to that.
HERO: Detective Jared (Mac) McLean. Widow with a small child. Gay but way deep in the closet. An attraction to a murder witness has him reeling.
HERO: Tony. Teacher. Out of the closet. Witnesses a fellow teacher being killed. Attracted to Mac but doesn’t do secret relationships.
In this scene, Mac realizes how close to came to losing Tony and feels the need to connect with him. I’ve hidden in a spoiler tag because it is a wee bit graphic.
“Jesus, Mac?” Tony said, sounding startled.
Mac backed off for a moment to free his mouth. “Awake yet?” he murmured, taking the opportunity to nuzzle soft balls. He sucked one in, mouthing it, then pulled back.
“I…yeah, definitely.”
Mac licked again, root to tip. “You remember who I am?”
“It’s coming back to me. Police protection.”
Mac trailed upwards over firm stomach to a dark nipple and rolled it in his mouth, sucking the tightening nub, nipping softly. “Remember who you are?”
“That’s getting a little fuzzy,” Tony claimed, pressing Mac’s head forward. Then he eased off. “You don’t have to…”
Mac laughed against his skin. “I’m supposed to wake you. I figured this would work.” He eased his way lower again.
“Oh, yeah. Everything’s working.”[/spoiler]
Life Lessons by Kaje Harper is available now for purchase.

You are so right Tori, M/M romance is always heavy on the angst. I read one last year and it was so angsty that when it was over I felt traumatized! haha
