So Micah is a douchebag. Let’s just put that out there. Emma had an interesting point of view that I enjoyed until she committed one of my deal breakers. Then I was checked out and over the pair of them and decided to invest emotionally in a peripheral couple who served as best friends to Micah and Emma. Oh Micah. You know that guy, he is probably a jock, who talks about his cock more than the chicks he’s screwing? Jaysus, Merry and Joseeefffff I was OVER his dick bragging. Like, I get it, it’s big, it’s weighty, it can eclipse the sun and make a mewling out of the fiercest warrior woman. However, by the time Emma gave her opinion of his package, I was disenchanted and unimpressed. There is SO such a thing as too much when it comes to a hero *ahem* beating me over the…head with how awesome his junk is. Leave it to the heroine fellas…we like it better coming from them. Reputable sources and what not. *wink*
In a nutshell, commitment phobe, athletic playboy meets bubbly, curvy, golden hearted woman who falls for him in one fell swoop. Problem, he is not ready for all that Emma brings to the table and in effect turns tail, pushing Emma to break things off. Micah is love-sick without her and Emma begins dating his team-mate. Talk about awkward and infuriating. I wonder if the author knows how sympathetic she wrote Micah as a character and how cruel a shrew Emma began to morph into. Don’t get me wrong, I am no heroine hater- but Emma did things to drive Micah crazy seemingly for sport. I am all for making a douche-lord pay and putting him through the paces to earn your back your heart. But Emma just went overboard and I soon found myself apathetic to the idea of their HEA.
As expected, Micah keepsEmma at arm’s length and she makes it clear she knows her worth and wants more. They break up before really getting together and Emma soon discovers that their whirlwind romance left her more than love sick- it left her pregnant. And then I discovered I detest her. I consider myself an uber progressive fictionista. I like my hero’s bad and I like my heroines sassy. I do not however, tolerate a heroine who lies, omits, hides, plots or schemes to control or manipulate a hero about a pregnancy. Instead of being a woman and telling Micah that she is pregnant, she creates this huge archaic quest for him to embark on to not only win back her heart but to find out about his child!
I sighed heavily and resisted the urge to blurt out I was pregnant. Micah hadn’t earned knowing that privileged information yet.
Bish what!?
I rooted for Micah to not only find out but read her the riot act for her controlling deception. SMH. Not cool Emma. Not cool and not so brave of you after all. Aside from dating his teammate and hiding her pregnancy, you get the impression that Emma is a big picture kind of girl and believed her actions had an “ends justify the means” sort of theme. Unfortunately, taking this journey with her, I am a details kind of girl and her actions after their break up were immature – which is rich considering she harbored concerns about Micah’s readiness to be a father.
My utter displeasure with Emma aside, the story was fast paced and the writing was witty and I rather enjoyed the dialogue. Background characters were rich and interesting and I really felt invested in the future possibilities of the characters in this world. The character development was not phoned in, Grace (Emma’s friend and mentor of sorts) leapt off the page! Author Jessa Eden really rolled her sleeves up and did the work to create such dimensional and flawed characters. I hated Emma’s actions (like big time) but it is a testament to Eden’s skill that I can still appreciate that the writing was as inviting and interesting as it was prior to being turned off by the plot developments. Jessa Eden is a first time author for me. I would check out her other works- after skimming a sample first of course.

Tori says
Unless the man is abusive, there is NO REASON to not tell the father of your child he has a child. That trope makes me stabby.
Kathrin says
Oh my, what’s with that title? Other than that it sounds amusing if you know what to expect…
LoriK says
Bish what!?, indeed. This is why I can’t tolerate secret baby plots in contemporaries. Tori is dead on. Unless he’s abusive there’s no excuse for deliberately withholding information about a pregnancy. If he’s abusive he’s not a hero. If he’s not abusive and she doesn’t tell him she’s not a heroine. Do. Not. Want.
Mandi says
Yeah – uh no.
And the cock obsession? Sir please.
Sheena says
Yaaassssss yassssss! I was so pissed with the heroine in this book. Micah was not abusive at ALL and the way she held the baby knowledge like a carrot on a stick….I was none NONE too pleased.
