A long time ago, my blog was asked to be an “Official Fifty” blog, to help promote the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie. They wouldn’t give us many details to what we would have to do, but I thought – why not? Something fun will hopefully come out of it. And while I’ve had a few giveaways and posted a few trailers, the most fun event I was offered, was to go to New York City for a screening of the movie with the Today show. I grabbed a friend, and off we went. Since the screening was with the Today Show, it meant getting up at 4am and watching the movie at 7:30am – but it was worth it.
I didn’t like the first Fifty Shades book. Ana annoyed me. However, I support romance books becoming movies and when I thought of this book becoming a movie, I thought of an epic girls night out with my friends, drinks and a silly movie.
What I didn’t expect was to really enjoy this. For as much as Ana irritated me while reading the book, Dakota Johnson’s portrayal of Ana is my favorite thing in this movie. I haven’t been following their press tour but I’ve been seeing a lot of tweets about Dakota and Jamie Dornan’s lack of chemistry. So I was expecting that to leak into the movie as well. But that is not the case. Dakota is adorable. She plays an innocent, yet strong willed female really well. She made me laugh. A lot. There were times the entire theater erupted in laughter. The scene where she is drunk at a club and decides to call Christian is so darn funny. And the boardroom scene, where she has a meeting with him to discuss the contract, is so sexually charged and fun. I’m a fan of hers for sure. Before the movie started, Jamie and Dakota walked in and Jamie got all the cheers. After the movie, they came back in, and everyone cheered for Dakota. It made me smile.
Jamie Dornan’s character is a little more distant. I enjoyed him and I thought he made a good Christina Grey, but I didn’t connect with him quite as much. I think he was very convincing in the love scenes, but not so convincing as a billionaire guy in charge of a huge company. The supporting cast is cute and doesn’t have a lot of screen time but Christian’s brother and Ana’s roommate are done well.
Now let’s get to the sex..because you guys. The sex. It’s good sex. Pretty sure I saw every inch of Dakota’s body. Dornan has some butt shots and we get to see some pubes – MAYBE a teeny glimpse of the peenie. But besides all the nakedness, the sex is intense and so well done. The first scene where he takes her virginity – may all virgins have an experience like this! There is another scene where he throws her hard onto her stomach, slaps her ass and just thrusts into her and goddamn. Smexy approves. I think they did as much sex as they could up to the R rating limit. You all are going to like.
I even liked the red room. It’s….classy. And the BDSM scenes are sensual and they fit. I honestly believed Jamie/Christian knew what he was doing. It was a beautiful room with some really nice scenes. (I even got a key to the red room – knock knock Christian. Smexy is coming in!)
I’m not a diehard fan of the book. I’ve only read it once and that was long ago when people said – hey there is this crazy book called Fifty Shades, have you read it? And everyone I know had never heard of it. So I can’t say yes or no if it truthfully followed the book. I think it did. The die-hard fans around me said it did.
You all are going to like this. I can’t wait to see it again with my girlfriends at home, then have a glass of wine and talk all about it for hours with them.
Also read Heroes and Heartbreakers review and Kate’s!
That’s it! I’m sold! Going to see this next week!
YAY!! I’ll probably see it when it comes to dvd because theaters-yuck.
Peenie? LOL.
I know they are framing this as a movie for couples to go to together, with the whole valentines day release thing, however it really does sound like I a movie you go to to have fun with friends.
I think it would work for both…as long as the fella is ready for some romance and sex ;)
looking forward to seeing this then. I liked the 2nd and 3rd books more than the first, so I am interested to see how they do with it. Loved your review on the movie…gets me excited to see it.
Great review. I have not read the books, and really had no intention of seeing the movie. Even after hearing about how much everyone enjoyed it, I still don’t think it is a movie for me. I’m not a fan of romantic comedies or chick flicks. I tend to like more horror, suspense, sci-fi type movies. I might try it when/if it comes to Netflix and cost me nothing. Glad to hear that it better than the book though.
I had a feeling that the movie was going to be better than the book!
Rare to say that, right?? :)
I was super excited when Charlie Hunnam was cast. The thought of him as Christian had me…panting, so I was bummed when he dropped out, because I couldn’t wait to see him naked on the big screen being all mouth watering dirty. I was still on the fence about going, but you’ve swayed me.
I thought about Charlie a few times while I watched the movie and tried to picture him in scenes. I think he would have made a good Christian. Dornan is ok – hope you enjoy!
It sounds like a great adventure Mandi, glad you had such a good time. I have never wanted to read the books, not sure if I will ever watch the movie. Not in the theater, but perhaps at home.
Going to see this for sure! I knew I could rely on you as always for the deets Smexi! Glad to hear that you enjoyed it and that the Ana part well done.
So glad you liked the movie, Mandi! Now I know I won’t be disappointed when my hubs takes me to see it on Friday. From the trailers I’ve seen it sure looks like Dakota nailed the Ana character perfectly.
Hope you enjoy and have a fun night!
