Wicked Wednesday: Top Ten Reasons to Read – Up in Smoke by Tessa Bailey

up in smoke

Connor Bannon is supposed to be dead. Dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEALs, he’s spent the last two years working as a street enforcer in Brooklyn for his cousin’s crime ring. Through a twist of fate, he’s now in Chicago, working undercover to bust criminals. But when a cute little arsonist joins the team—all combat boots, tiny jean shorts, and hot-pink hair—Connor’s notorious iron control slips.

Erin “she’s getting away” O’Dea knows two things. She hates authority. And… Nope, that’s it. When she’s forced to operate on the “right” side of the law, her fear of being confined and controlled blazes to the surface. The last thing she expects is a control freak like Connor to soothe her when she needs it most. Worse, something behind the sexy ex-soldier’s eyes ignites a dangerous inferno of desire. One that invites Erin to play with fire. And one that could get them both killed…

I like this series – you can read the review of book one here. (can be read as a stand alone). Before I get into all the dirty quotes, let me note this: Connor is a very possessive and controlling hero. Completely over the top. From the first time he sets his eyes on Erin, he wants to control every detail of her life (and he tries to). I think this may be a turn off for some readers. He amused me, but I think he may frustrate some. He is very, very, very alpha. And the heroine grew up with an abusive step-father who locked her in a closet for days on end. She is very troubled. Being with an extreme alpha and being broken – well – some may not like that. I enjoyed the heroine though. She is broken, but not her spirit. She is obsessed with fire. She has a smart mouth.

But now onto the dirty. Please be warned, explicit language below.

10. Because of Erin’s abusive childhood, she does NOT like to be touched. BUT – she can touch others. And oh, does she touch Connor. Eventually.

“I didn’t say I couldn’t touch.” She gripped the collar of his shirt and dragged him forward, bringing their mouths an inch apart. “Just you.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw. “I’ll make you beg for my goddamn hands on you.”

9. Question: What is the status of Connor’s cock in Chapter two? Answer:

“My cock is big and angry because you made it that way. That makes it your responsibility. Move.”

8. Connor is willing to beg. And dry hump.

“Please, Connor. Connor, please,”

“What are you begging for?” The question cracked like a whip. “You’re the hottest goddamn thing I’ve ever seen, thighs spread wide open as you dry-fuck me. I should be the one begging.” He groaned as she picked up speed, angling his hips more, giving her everything.  “I’ve never begged a fucking day in my life, but you’re going to make me, aren’t you?”

Her muscles clenched. The flesh between her legs seized. Yes. Yes. “I can’t. I don’t…”

“You will,” he gritted out. “Jesus Christ, look at you. You’ll be worth my pride.”

7. Boner Control Issue

“I haven’t been in the same room as you, Erin, when my cock wasn’t rock hard and ready to fuck. You know it, too.You know I want to plant it deep inside you. Watch you shift around trying to get used to being crammed so motherfucking tight.”

6. Because Erin doesn’t like to be touched, they can’t have intercourse. This pretty much kills Connor (yet he never forces her – only when she is ready)

“Tell me you’ll spread your legs for it someday, Erin. Give me that.” He fisted his cock and pumped twice. “I can only fantasize about coming in your pussy so many times before I need the real thing. I bet you’re fuck-tight, aren’t you? Like a closed fist.”

She poured more oil into her hands and rubbed them together. “Yes, I want very much to spread my legs for it someday.” Her voice was throaty, sexual. “And yes, baby, I’m nice and tight.”

He almost came.

5. Did I mention that Connor is a bit possessive? This is said on the second day he knows her:

“It goes unsaid that if you go near another man, I’ll end his life.”

4.  Who want a mess in their jeans??

“If you sit down on my hard cock right now, when I can finally taste your tits on my tongue, I’ll come in my jeans, Erin. And we’re not allowing that today. You’ll have to suffer with me.”

3. Connor’s ONE reason for getting out of bed every day:

“You’re going to make me live for a single stroke of that tight pussy, aren’t you? Make me get out of bed just for that hot squeeze every day.

2. Question: How long is Connor’s cock? Answer:

When we’re finished getting you ready, you’ll be begging for inches. I’m going to give you ten.

1. Last year, I read Staking His Claim by Tessa Bailey, and she used the term, “weighty erection” which I thought was the best thing ever. Well she pulled it out again! Hapenis!

“You’re going to need a safe word, Erin, because I’m about to do such obscene things to your pussy with my mouth, you’re going to scream for me to stop even when you want me to keep going.” He slapped her between the thighs with his weighty erection, groaning at the sound of their most sensitive flesh connecting. “Pick a word to scream if you can’t take it.”
