Former beauty queen Sheila Tremayne looks dainty, but she’s tougher than she seems. The hard-as-nails business woman is determined to bring down corruption among Lantano Valley’s rich and powerful. Her latest scheme to get technology tycoon Chadwick Oliver is going perfectly until a distraction arrives in the form of Malcolm—the man who broke her heart and who happens to be Chadwick’s son…
Malcolm spent five long years away after his father publicly blamed him for some shady business dealings. Now he’s back to exact some revenge. Reconnecting with Sheila was never part of the plan, but the second he sees her, there’s no way he can resist…
Sheila and Malcolm quickly fall into the sizzling passion between them, but Malcolm has no intention of staying once he’s finished with his father—even if leaving Sheila again might be more than he can bear.
This is a book where a ton of things are going on but nothing happens at the same time. Our heroine Sheila, is a former beauty pageant attendee and now works as a party planner. But secretly she works for her family’s business that takes down corrupt business people. Her entire family is involved in this business, with her father running the ship. This is the second book in the series (each has a different hero/heroine) and I think this family business must have been explained better in book one because I was confused about exactly what this business did and how big a part in plays in this family’s life. It was not explained well.
Sheila is in charge of a party at Chadwick Oliver’s house – a man who her family wants to take down. This man has stolen WWII art that belongs to someone special in Sheila’s life, so while she is managing the party, she also sneaks into Chadwick’s office to get some more evidence. During this party she runs into her ex-lover Malcolm, who happens to be Chadwick’s son. Malcolm left his family business a few years ago, because he hates his father and his father hates him. He is now trying to secretly buy up shares of his father’s company to ruin him (or something along those lines)
Meanwhile, Malcolm had cancer and it might come back. Sheila is also an artist and needs to paint. There are buildings exploding and sneaking into warehouses (that was the only fun part of the book). This cover does not represent this book at all. It makes it look like a small town, cozy romance – which this book is not. This book is very slow. Not a lot happens. I either wanted much more art thievery action or some good romance.
Malcolm and Sheila loved each other before he took off. Now he is back and he kisses her when he knows she just has been snooping around his father’s office. Huh? Later you learn he hates his father and wants Sheila to find evidence to hurt him. But – the first kiss was an odd moment. The romance between them is defiantly on the back burner in this one. I liked them together – They had chemistry but there needed to be much more sexual tension and romance to make it memorable.
Overall, this story didn’t work for me.
