To keep someone he loved alive, Erik Anderson made a deal with the devil. He sold his soul and now must collect 1,000 souls as a grim reaper. Having lost contact with his human former lover, Erik is a shell of a human (well, he isn’t human anymore). He takes the Copenhagen line each night, to the club scene to find his next victim. Ensconced in a bright light, that is the beacon to tell him who is next to die. He likes the club scene because he can hide away in the beat of the music and it’s not as tragic as other deaths he might have to witness.
Mina Castner is in a romantic rut. When her roommate (annoying and not really a nice person) sets her up on a blind date, while Mina would rather be at home with her a cat and a book, she agrees to try. Her date is at a loud club, and there is no chemistry. She accidentally spills her drink on Erik, who she uses as an excuse to dodge her failing blind date. Her and Erik end up going to a quieter lounge and talking until dawn. While Erik is still mostly a mystery, she is intrigued by him. She seeks him out at the club the next night, and there is definitely chemistry between them. But Erik knows if he touches her, he will slowly suck away her life. What to do, what to do??
This is a novella-length paranormal romance. Erik is a more broody/sullen type hero who hates his lot in life and wishes he had never taken that darn devil bargain. Those bargains where you have to give up your soul, never quite work out, huh? Collecting 1,000 souls is no fun. Mina is more perky and very direct. This is something Erik is drawn to. She is honest and asks him direct questions. He can’t answer many as he doesn’t want her to find out what he is, but she never gives up. Her relentless pursuit of him is what breaks down Erik’s barriers.
I would have liked the demon world explored and explained a little more. It’s vague and hard to comprehend and picture. I also was not a huge fan of the end of this book. I won’t spoil it, but I knew something big had to happen as Erik can’t touch the mortal/human Mina. It needed more time to be explained and I needed Mina’s feelings on all of it to be deeper. Something big happens and she just shrugs it off. My reaction was, “HUH??”
I also wonder about the fact that Erik has this immortal life until he collects 1,000 souls – but 1,000 really doesn’t seem like that many. Right? Unless the people about to die are hard to find – but it seems like there were people ready to die all around him. He could be done in a few years. Then – he is really dead and the HEA seems a little…..short.
