In The Wilds Of Scotland…
Impulsive Mairead Buchanan’s only goal is to track down the man responsible for her brother’s death. Until a shameful encounter with Caird of enemy clan Colquhoun proves a distraction she can’t ignore…
Nothing could have prepared Mairead for the path she’s thrown onto when the secrets of a jewelled dagger are revealed and she finds herself kidnapped by this sexy Highlander! With Mairead’s recklessness a perfect foil to Caird’s cool command, can these two enemies set their clans’ differences aside and surrender to the desire that rages between them?
I’m a sucker for big, alpha highland men kidnapping the heroine. I know, this is a cave-man attitude to have, but it can be a fun set-up in a romance book. When Mairead discovers her brother’s been murdered and a dagger of his stolen, she tracks the murderer to a nearby inn. She doesn’t know why this dagger is so important, but she knows her brother was going to sell it to pay off his debts. But when she sneaks into the room she thinks is the murderer (to steal back the dagger) she comes across a naked highlander instead. Oops!
Caird doesn’t take to kindly to a random woman in his room – well – he likes it until he realizes she isn’t there to pleasure him. When he realizes she is from an enemy clan, he starts to get suspicious. Very suspicious. She just happens to waltz into his room, looking for something? He thinks she is up to something, but he is needed at a family’s wedding celebration. So he decides to drag her along, until he can get to the bottom of her scheme.
This has a very fun set-up and very likable characters in Caird and Mairead. They have good chemistry together, as Mairead is very put-out at being kidnapped and Caird just wants the truth out of her. There is some good banter and a lot of secrets and hidden, lusty glances. But I felt like we just walk in circles in this book. Mairead refuses to tell Caird the truth, or at least all of it. Caird refuses to do anything until he learns the truth. So not a lot happens. There are a few injuries here and there that make the action ramp up a bit, but otherwise it’s so slow – and that’s a shame because if more had happened, this book would have definitely engaged me. I feel like by page 100, we were still at ground zero, as Mairead and Caird both want the dagger and Mairead refusing to tell Caird what really happened to her brother and Caird refusing to tell Mairead what the dagger really stands for. I got bored. But I do hope another highlander kidnapping book comes my way.
