An immortal without a soul is bad enough. But when his only tether to remaining honorable is his addiction to bone-crushing pain, it makes Blaéz a dangerously loose cannon. A Guardian sworn to protect mortals from supernatural evil, Blaéz straddles the edge of darkness as his needs grow. When a good deed brings him to the doorstep of a female unlike any other, one whose touch ignites emotions long lost in the hellish pits of Tartarus, he’s determined not to lose her. She belongs to him. But she’s human. Forbidden. And bringing her into his life may just destroy them both…
He shuddered then shook his head. “No. Males are…just males. But you, little sun, I’m drunk on your beauty.”
Hunky paranormal Guardian protector with a penchant for self- flagellation and if not physically- is most assuredly emotionally scarred- Tuh! Sign me up please! Blaez is a Guardian warrior who is void of emotions. The only way he can feel is to cause himself extensive harm. Whether it be brutal fights or just obstinately placing himself in a position to be hit, burned, slammed, broken, sliced or diced- Blaez had a serious self worth hang up and after three thousand years of immortality, he’s frankly had enough. And everyone around him knows it. And fears for him as he cares very little for himself.
That is until he happens upon a human who woman Darci who possesses an ability to save him from himself.
This was his great life; to protect this fragile species that didn’t give a rat’s furry arse about the dangers of the activities they pursued. On the upside, the fact the fights had no rules suited him. Brutal. Deadly. Precisely how he preferred his fights.
Let’s just say, saving her nephew from certain death, an act that led him right to Darci, is the beginning and the end and a countdown to the certain dangers that await them both. Darci is letting life pass her by. She’s never had a real relationship (I have reason to believe she is virginal- but this is not explicitly made apparent right away) and her emotions ride her heavy as she is drawn into Blaez’s world, a world she unconsciously prepared her whole life for as a lover of paranormal fiction. It is astounding to Darci that things really do go bump in the night in the under-veil underbelly, however, she gains her footing quickly as she understands the concepts and rules that reign in Blaze’s domain.
Their relationship goes from zero to 100 as Darci awakens his long dead emotions. He can only feel when near her are this drives him berserk. It also serves as a wedge when Darci lets her fears that he only wants her carnally because she gives him boners and stirs his loins. She falls for Blaez hard and has a difficult time accepting his inability to connect with her emotionally. Their tribulations were hard to witness. At times, I wanted to shake Darci and shout “Gods woman, the male has been without emotions for several millenia!! Give him time! ” and rail at Blaez, “For the love of damnation! Tell the girl you have feelings that go beyond your cock for her, already.”
“Leave it alone, Darci.” Like hell she would. “If I’m not with you, do you feel anything?”
“No.” A tic worked his jaw. “I’m good at mimicking emotions. I can tease, taunt, laugh, and wince like any other. Is that what you want to hear? That I’m one big fucking lie? Ruins the image a little, doesn’t it?
…
Then you should have sated clearly what you wanted from me from the get go. Hey, I’m good with no strings attached sex,” she lied. “Hell, you sure are better than my other lovers-”
She stood there for a second, struggling to breathe. Unable to stop the growing pain in her chest. What lovers? She only had one. her life had been so empty. She had no idea why she’d said that, maybe because she just wanted a reaction from him.
The tension, misunderstandings and little deceptions between them kept the plot moving and served as an excellent support to the epic danger storyline. The relationship was front and center (yessss!! so often the relationship stuff is nuanced to death!) but there was some really nice action and adventure and intrigue to balance things, because after-all, this is not just a tale of how-the-human-hooked-the-immortal-warrior; This new to me author, created a story of redemption and paranormal intrigue- and I liked it!
Blaez kissed her again, taking in her shuddering breath. He couldn’t seem to stop touching her, tasting her- he needed her with a desperation that gnawed deep inside of him. Wanted her embedded in that empty place where his soul should have been.
…
He lifted her thigh and angled her hips, his cock sliding against her cleft. He tried to be gentle but knew he hadn’t a prayer in hell of that happening. The tempting heat of her slick flesh undid him.
Breaking Fate is book 2 in the Fallen Guardians series and I enjoyed it enough to add book 1, Absolute Surrender, to my TBR list, pile, to see what I may be missing. This series has promise and I’m game to see what direction it heads in next. It lacks some polish, however, in retrospect, I think that may be part of its charm. It is not perfect, there are some wobbles here and there and a few eye brow raising moments where I wish things were a little more crisp- noting this is coming from the rabidly avid paranormal fiction reader aficionado, I fancy myself to be; I am positive there is a core base that will gobble this novel up. The hero made me weep, the heroine left me little choice than to root for her (and I’m talking pom-pom wielding, pep rally levels of rooting) and the supporting characters piqued my interest. Solid novel and I look forward to reading more. Stands alone- a little wobbly on a peg leg. If you enjoy it as I have, you will definitely feel a need to read book 1. The only times I considered putting this down was when I seriously pondered stopping to read book 1 to get a little more context and understanding. As far as paranormal romances go, this one is a good bet.
