January Mini Reviews
Smexy’s Top Ten
Mandi news: I DNF’d Extreme Honor by Piper Drake. The premise is a military dog whose trainer has died in combat. The dog is suffering PTSD-like symptoms and won’t bond with another handler. The hero works with dogs and is stumped. The heroine bursts onto the scene wanting to work with the dog – but she is super secretive and bad guys come around too. I DNF’d around page 75. I just wasn’t feeling it. The suspense wasn’t working for me and I didn’t like the heroine.
Carolina Dreaming by Virginia Kantra is a really nice contemporary romance. The hero was a marine and then got into a bar fight and found himself in jail. He is now out, and doesn’t know what to do with his life. He ends up in a small beach town where the heroine owns a bakery. She likes bad boys….really good chemistry. I like this series in general. Review coming.
The Halfling by HD Gordon is an urban fantasy meets superhero book. The heroine is 17 and exiled from the Fae land to live in the human world. She befriends a human girl and together they fight crime – which leads to a bigger bad guy. There is a mysterious hot neighbor and some other characters that made this book really enjoyable. I’ll review it next week.
News from Tori: Jennifer Estep’s Bitter Bite enters a new story line and ups the emotional tone when she is forced to defend family. I loved the protectiveness the heroine shows towards her foster brother and the lengths she goes to save him from himself. Reviewing for H&H.
Jockblocked by Jen Frederick. While I enjoyed Sacked (book one) I absolutely loved Jockblocked. Fredericks stays on the downlow in the angst department, choosing realistic situations to build an enchanting romance with is brimming with humor and some mild conflict. Review to come.
The Undoing by Shelly Laurenston is a hilarious, sexy, outrageous pnr that picks up where book one leaves off and runs with the on going arc. A well plotted storyline blends well with the romance with an action packed ending. Review to come.
The Fall Of The Red Queen by Lexxi Callihan is an emotionally lush second chance romance that tells a heartbreaking tale of love, loss, and redemption for a woman whose villainous deeds hide a heart a gold. Review to come.
The Baller by Vi Keeland-A steamy, fun, outrageous sports romance that matches an NFL star quarterback with a no nonsense sportscaster. Extreme heat, humorous banter, and some minor conflict follows this couple as they work towards the goal post.
This weekend I’m reading Brotherhood of Death by J.D. Robb and Lisa Sherin’s Brimstone in Deception.
