Blurb: So six years ago, Mallory Jade gave up killing. Now she’s a fixer. Got a problem with a demon? She can help. Infestation of pixies? She’s got you covered. Kidnapped by an undead lich? She’s on her way. Anything you need, so long as she doesn’t have to kill. It’s her one unbreakable rule.

Aside from a few near-death experiences, her new life is good, until her job dumps her in the lap of the man she walked out on six years before. Law Stanger, her former partner and lover, wants her back in his life. He’s not above playing dirty. But Mallory knows it can never work. She has secrets Law can never understand or forgive.

All Mallory wants now is to finish her job–track down an incubus and the precious box he stole–and get the hell out of town before Law shatters her heart again. But it wasn’t fate that drew her and Law together after all these years, it was cunning calculation. Now they must face an enemy more powerful than they can imagine, one that has no intention of leaving anybody alive.

The blurb sets this up well so I’ll try not to duplicate it. This book starts right in the middle of action. Mallory heads into a hotel to track down an incubus to take a box from him as her client has hired her to do. Mallory travels with her own personal escort of ghosts – eighteen to be exact. They help her in times of need – they protect her, they care for her. One of her ghosts named Tabitha, died as a teenager, and still has some hormonal teenage things going on. So when Tabitha has a melt down while walking into the hotel, Mallory gets tired of it and lets her have her melt down in public (instead of shielding everyone from her). Well, this causes a scene – and Mallory wonders why Tabitha is so set upon having a massive freak out session. Tabitha won’t speak to her, so Mallory shoves it off as a temper tantrum and gets on with her job.

But then she runs into her ex-lover, Law. Six years ago Mallory got really sick of killing things – demons, ghosts – whatever. After having to kill a large amount of innocent ghosts, she ran. She couldn’t take it anymore. But now Law is standing in front of her all growly and surly and…..sexy and damn it Mallory doesn’t know what to do. Law is pissed she disappeared on him. They love each other! But the hurt and pain of the last six years. Oh the angst. They deal with their pain by having angry sex up against a wall. I won’t complain about this one bit.

But it’s not all banging. The incubus creates drama, a demon appears and stuff gets in the way of their reunion.

This is a pretty quick read, which is something you don’t always get in an urban fantasy. It starts right with action, which is great but at the same time I would have liked to get to know this world a little better. It’s so focused on this one job (the book only takes place during one day) that it didn’t feel rushed it just felt like there was narrow vision. I wanted to take a step back and see a little broader view of the world.

Other than that, I really liked Law and Mallory. Law is all alpha and broody. I also like how honest they are with each other. They are honest with their feelings and emotions – and it was refreshing. The epilogue sets us up for another book. If you are in the mood for a new, quick, urban fantasy read, I think you will like this one.
