This is a follow-up novella to Midnight Vengeance, so the couple has already had their HEA. I’ve read Midnight Vengeance, but I don’t remember it, and this still read really easy as a stand-alone. I love Lisa Marie Rice books. They always have super alpha, over-protective heroes who are obsessively in love with the heroine. Over the top in love – it’s fun.
Jacko is Navy SEAL and now works private security with his good buddies. They are all alpha, deadly, and in love with their wives. Jacko and Lauren are in love, but not married yet. Jacko has asked, several times, and Lauren lives with him but she hasn’t quite said yes yet. After being on the run and hiding her identity, she is settling into her new life of love and bliss. She is getting used to being loved by Jacko, fiercely. He worships her. He will do anything, and I mean anything to make her happy. He also really likes having sex.
She thought he’d carry her to bed, which he sometimes did. It was his way to get them into the bedroom as fast as possible, though he knew she thought it was romantic.
Not romantic. Practical.
But Jacko could do romance.
But then she tells him she is pregnant. Jacko gets up and leaves. He doesn’t handle it well:
Lauren bleeding to death flashed across his vision again and bile rose up his gullet. He leaned forward and vomited last night’s dinner. His stomach simply emptied itself out, the contents splashing onto the shoulder of the road in great heaving spasms. He has no control, none.
His body was rejecting what was in his stomach and rejecting the thought of Lauren pregnant with his child.
Don’t be too angry with Jacko. His mother was a junkie addict who was a horrible mother and he never met his father. He is terrified his bad genes will run in the baby’s blood. So he runs instead. He isn’t running from Lauren – just running to gather information. He goes back to his hometown and starts to uncover information about his father, as his mother is already dead. This leads to a little action and suspense in the story.
During the time he is gone, his emotions are on such a roller coaster, Lauren will call him and he never speaks. He just listens as she reminisces about how they met and how much she loves him. It’s so sweet and romantic. Lauren is surrounded by Jacko’s friends (who are also co-workers) and they vow to hunt Jacko down and cut off his balls, for leaving Lauren. But that’s just how they show that they love him.
Don’t worry – Jacko returns, and good things happen. It’s a very sweet and romantic novella with a dash of suspense.
