Stranded on an abandoned planet with my fated mate.
Vera can’t stand me, which is fine by me because I don’t like people much, especially humans. Especially voluptuous human women with liquid dark eyes and lips that begged to be kissed and curves that fit perfectly against my warrior’s physique.
Our ship crashed and now we’re stuck for who knows how long, waiting for rescue. I’m not sure I can resist her much longer and I’m starting to think the attraction is mutual.
The problem is she’s the sister of my princess and too good for a grizzled warrior like me.
Favorite Quote: “Why do you say things like that? Things that make me think you like me?”
“It is not my duty to like you.”
She rolled her eyes and walked away.
Admittedly, I’ve been severely spoiled by R.Lee Smith when it comes to alien romance. What can I say, a bar has been irrevocably set. That being said, I liked this story but there was something huge missing. Which is disconcerting given the fact that the book is billed as a stand alone romance. Stand alone it most assuredly did not.
For starters, the book starts rather abruptly, instead of the beginning of the story, it feels as if you are just plopped down, perhaps in chapter 10 or so of a much larger book. I could not shake the feeling that there was something that I should know already. I can’t decide if this book is one long excerpt or its own novel. Or maybe it’s more of a verbose serial? In any case, It was very distracting not having access to information and feelings that the novel suggested I be experiencing. Which is kind of a shame because I liked the premise a lot.
Vera is a very independent woman. Preferring her solitude and space to study her plants, she is a talented botanist who lives her life on her own terms. She s headstrong, but not completely unseasonable and manages to get herself into just enough trouble where she still comes across as likable with an appealing quirk. Glin is a military officer in the Prince’s armed forces. He is a big, blue, sex on a stick alien hard ass who has met his match with Vera. Vera is sister to the Prince’s new bride and Glin has a serous inferiority complex preventing him from acting on his attraction to Vera. Human/Alien matings are not taboo so the only thing standing in the way of a Vera/Glin smex sandwich is, well, Vera and Glin!
Tasked with escorting Vera to the planet Fremm where she is to attend her sister’s wedding, poor Glin is barely able to hold himself back. He hides behind his duty to protect her and his view that she is too far above his station to mate. There is a biological imperative when it comes to mating and Glin is only fighting the inevitable. Once they mutually get over their hang up, they actually have a pretty sweet and pleasing romance.
There is little conflict, most of the issues are directly related to how they feel about one another and the emotional barriers and obstacles they overcome. There is juuuust enough potential danger to satisfy and I actually don’t mind and prefer it that way. However, if you are going to liven the place up with drama and danger, it can’t be corny or feel like filler. There is a weird action sequence that kind of stuck out like a sore thumb and raised more questions than it answered, but its forgiven as it is brief and did not really hinder the plot resolution…a hiccup as it were. I am more than happy to concentrate on their more shining moments.
“You’re mine,” he said, ending any argument.
“Yours,” I agreed.
He rolled onto his back and lifted me above him. I straddled him once again, spreading my legs wide to settle my hips just above his cock. Ram rod straight and impossibly hard, it fit into the cleft of my bottom. I wiggled against it, laughing at my mate’s frustrated growl. Then I noticed his hands clenching the bed sheets. Maybe teasing my warrior wasn’t the best idea.
He nodded. “Les chance I could-”
I leaned forward, capturing his mouth before he could finish that sentence. He would never hurt me.
Overall, this has the potential to be something special, but was far to short for its ambition and as a result there was no time to properly build these characters and world as it should be. I may wait until a few more are released and then read he series in rapid succession to get a better feel for the world. If you don’t mind some of the issues I’ve raised and are partial to sexy alien romance, I’d recommend it. Just don’t expect anything epic and prepare to be left wondering if you are not committed to going back to read the first two novels in the series.
