Former SEAL Jaxson River would give his life for his brothers and his pack, but if he doesn’t claim a mate soon, he’ll be forced to step down as their alpha. There’s only one problem: Jaxson’s dark secret would kill any mate he claimed. With someone kidnapping shifters off the street—and only Jaxson and his brothers, Jace and Jared, to stop them—now is not the time for his secret to come out.
Curvy Olivia Lilyfield is a half-witch orphan with a dark secret of her own. She wants to atone for it by doing good in the world, so when she finds a wolf being tortured in an alley, she doesn’t hesitate to help… even though wolves and witches mix like matches and TNT.
Olivia’s dangerous magic means she can’t let anyone get too close—but Jaxson can’t keep his hands off her, and his kisses are more than she can resist. As they race to save the disappearing shifters of Seattle, the true danger lies in loving each other. They’re playing with magical fire… and their secrets could end up destroying them both.
I received a request to review this in audio format, and I thought, why not? I love audio books and I had not read a shifter book in a while. Jaxson is the alpha of his clan, and with two close brothers, clan business keeps him busy. When he learns that someone is kidnapping shifters, he decides to investigate. He allows himself to be caught in an ally, hoping it’s one of the bad guys, but he is interrupted by our heroine, Olivia.
Having recently quit her job, she happens upon Jax getting hurt – and steps in, even though a human against a shifter is probably a bad idea. Jaxson is immediately enthralled with Olivia – and her ballsy attitude. He gives her a job and the two of them have a hard time keeping their hands off one another. But they each have a secret they are afraid to share – Olivia is half-witch, and witches and shifters do not trust each other one bit. Jaxson’s secret is that he was cursed when he was younger that if he claims a mate, they will die. He knows Olivia is his mate, but he can not claim her. But he doesn’t know she is a witch, so…..
This is a quick read/listen with a definite erotic feel. I liked Jaxson and Olivia together, they had nice chemistry. Jaxson never felt super alpha to me…he is a little more low-key and not growly or super intense. His brothers both seem to have dark secrets that I’m sure are revealed in future books.
I think the end wrapped up a little too fast and tidy for my liking. It’s a pretty standard shifter romance, with the romance moving fast and a conflict that was just okay for me.
Narrated by Douglas Berger and Delisha Forest, they were pretty monotone for me. When action happened, or emotions ran high, I didn’t feel it from them. This would probably be better off as a kindle book.
